Re: pinion nut torque

I'm coming in rather late to this discussion! Steve is absolutely correct, in fact having too much oil in the diff. will have a churning effect giving heating. The lower level plug is there for a reason: pour oil in until it just begins to trickle out. Replace plug with a new fibre washer. AS to the...

Re: TC Hand Brake

Rob's photo shows some badly worn teeth! By using the adjustments, the lever can be brought onto a less worn part of the quadrant .which will give more positive locking. Often the pawl gets damaged as well: I have these in stock, and am about to do more quadrants.

Re: Early UK Registration

You can only get Trade plates if you are a trader or a car repairer. They are for collecting a car they have bought, or for driving it to test it: NOT for general use! The trader also has to have insurance that covers them to drive any car (so not cheap!)

Re: Early UK Registration

As I understand it, Trade Plates were used by dealers to move cars around, so that they would be covered by their insurance, and also because the cars were not taxed. We used to have a very simple system whereby an owner taxed a car for either 6 or 12 months, and if they sold it, the log book was ha...

Re: Camshaft Life

hi Steve - those tappets definitely look suspect! We have discussed this many times over the years: the originals were cast iron which was heated up (don't ask me to what temperature, others or Mr. Google will know) then placed on a cold iron (or maybe steel) plate in a process called Chill Quenchin...

Correct! The hinges face forwards, held down by c/s screws directly onto the plywood floor, with carpet over them.

Re: TC rear axle pinon shaft oil seal

The drive flange boss is 1.25" diam, so that seal would be a very poor fit, unless a speedisleeve bumped it up to 1.75" The boss gets scored, because grit gets drawn into the scroll (it is doing its best to keep the oil in - at least when going forwards - but also drags in dust & grit, which is what...

Re: TC Rear Wheel Bearings

These cannot be "original TC " bearings because they have seals, which were probably not invented in 1945!

I always stock new bearings, 6208ZZ & BL208ZZ (two metal shields, greased for life).

Re: Mg ta engine rebuild

As Steve says, you should be able to drill the stud: start with a centre-drill (very short, so they don't wobble about) and gradually work up in size. With a bit of luck you might be able to get the bits out with a scriber and a magnet. A thread insert might work, if there is enough metal at that po...

Re: TC Gearbox Jumping Out of Second Gear

When I first did mine, many years ago, because it was jumping out of gear, the main wear was in the front layshaft thrust bearing. The layshaft constantly rotates, and because of the teeth direction, it is pushed to the front. These simple little thrust washers are quite expensive, and only availabl...

Re: TC Rear Wheel Bearings

The number of balls must affect the load bearing capacity and life, otherwise why would they be made and sold at greater cost? The increased area of contact is the difference, which is why taper-roller bearings out-perform balls, on stub axles and diff. pinions (but cannot unfortunately be used in o...

Re: TC Rear Wheel Bearings

hi Jonny - they were originally Ransome & Marles heavy-duty bearings with 12 balls in a brass cage, unsealed, now obsolete. For years people used 6208 (same size, 80x40x18mm), usually unsealed and very cheap. However, they only have 8 or 9 balls and often fail. A better alternative is the BL208 or M...

I have all the parts to rebuild a TA/B/C diff - CW&Ps, Spiders, Sun & Planet gears, Centre Housing (new & repaired), Taper Roller Bearings (and ball brgs.). These are all new, top quality (apart from repaired centres) whereas I think Doug's are used (judging from the photos in his cat). In addition,...

hi Tony - unluckily for you, there is nothing further known of the past history of TA2632, other than that it was entered onto the T-Register in 1983 (#6557) with owner I. Palmisano, not even registered as a Tickford. There is a list of all the cars converted at Newport Pagnall: I cannot put my hand...

You could try Brown & Gammons, they cover all models but have years of experience going right back to Ron's racing days. George Edney has as much experience, and his son Peter is getting going again after the disastrous fire. Other than that, have you thought of doing it yourself? Every part is avai...

Re: MG TA internal engine parts

Until you tear down the engine, you won't know why it seized: the pistons & rods might be OK. It is probably wise to replace the rings, and lightly hone the bores. If the white-metal bearings are suspect and you have to replace them, others in the States will be able to tell you where to get these d...

Jan - I am no expert in these matters, but I suspect that 3D printing would not have the strength for worms and pegs. Being built up from fine particles it is akin to sintering. Thanks to Digby Elliott who has loaned me some worms, i now have several to try: the difficulty will be to mount them in s...

Re: Stering Peg

As a first approximation, I machined a cone on an Al. rod, by swivelling the top slide, and 12.5 degrees looked good on both worms I have. You could possibly get that done in California. The pegs could be ground, but are tricky to hold. For something so critical, they should have been checked using ...

hi Steve - both worm and peg should be case-hardened (at least 10-thou deep) and ground. The Bishop cam co. who invented the thing, also made special machine tools to produce them, and it seems that nobody since has been able to reproduce them correctly! Eric Worpe has done a lot of research into wo...

Several years ago, Bob & Lynn Douglas went on) an epic trip in their TC from Terra Del Fuego all the way to Alaska, and put out a blog which I'm sure many of us followed, so I suggested that they write a book (Harry Pyle did one about his travels) but AFAIK they did not. A pity, because it would be ...
