Re: What's it like to live with a MGTC?

Well spoken Robert and you made the correct decision. I owned my TC for 20 years, restored it from the ground up, and drove it almost twenty thousand miles. It was bog standard for the most part, no five speed, no higher geared rear end, no VW steering box, standard brakes etc. etc. and set up prope...

Re: Oil catchment tray

Because the pan gaskets and the front seal are usually not the problem, it is the rear slinger that causes the major leak that this thing was designed to remedy as a stop gap band aid :D measure.

Re: Parts needed for TC 7801

I had mine chrome plated, the cost of silvering was quite high, and it really doesn't last all that well. I ran them with the standard bulbs, and they were adequate, now I can't compare performance to what a silvered reflector was because my car came with sealed beams. The reality is that my nightti...

Re: ‘48 MG TC

I would agree with Mark, TC2911 had some remnants of dull thin black paint in various places on some of the original timbers particularly around the firewall which had never been removed. I notice on your car there is some black paint showing around the edges of the red which looks the same as what ...

Re: Heat soak/Vapour lock - advice please

TC2911 never overheated and it was only heat soak on fairly warm days, the car was black by the way which didn't help matters I am sure. Louvering the bonnet was something that I was definitely not going to do. Our petrol was 10% ethanol and eventually I learned to live with it and just pulled the c...

Re: Heat soak/Vapour lock - advice please

I had the same problem with TC2911. As I used this car regularly and filled the tank several times a month the problem was not old petrol. It could have been caused by ethanol as that is all we have here for the most part. I had spacers under the carbs, a coated exhaust manifold and made up a little...

Re: TC wing piping question.

Ray, believe me TC2911 was a running shed when I bought it, fiberglass rear wings, body tub made of bondo and roof flashing, some of the timbers were grafted to pine, etc etc.

Re: TC wing piping question.

Ray, when I restored TC2911 I used "TCs Forever" as my guide as best I could. I suspect it is as accurate as anything could have been at the time and probably still is. Philosophically I didn't want to impart what I thought or what anyone else interpreted as looking better than the photos and instru...

Oh that.......just good old acrylic lacquer, no base coat clear, fancy urethane, etc. Shot out in my drive way piece by piece, hand sanded and buffed.......

Re: TC wing piping question.

Ray, if you mean does the piping have a chrome wrap finish? Absolutely not, it is black, and you are seeing reflection. Yes, there is a gap and I believe that to be the way they were done.

Re: Thinking of adding this to my stable

Ultimately it comes down to what incorrect parts you are willing to accept on a vehicle like this. The engine is a fairly important piece, is that a deal breaker or is the improvement worth it? The FT576 lamp didn't come out till the mid 50's, is it "appropriate" or just incorrect for the vehicle? Y...

Re: Thinking of adding this to my stable

I'm not an expert on pre war cars, but the driving lamp is incorrect, and the trafficators, and it appears to have a later xpag engine. TA owners will have to chime in.

Re: Rear wing piping

Ray, there is a lot to be said for being a purist, but I might suggest using double sided tape to position the piping rather than trying to put nails through the gaps between timber and sheet metal. Also easier to reposition should you need to. :)

Ray, I believe cars from sn. 5000 down had the FT27, your car would be correct with the SF462 as is.

Re: sector shaft bore

Mark,
Good points. Let's factor in the cost of the VW conversion and see how that affects cost of operation compared to tire wear if that is a problem. I have driven a TC equipped with a VW conversion and it was fine, but I do prefer the faster feel of the original box when all is set up properly.

Re: sector shaft bore

Mark, my Morgan is the same way and there is a slight bit of lost motion also in the steering box as all of them have, but it does goe nicely down the road. My TC did not have much more free play than my Morgan and the tie rod ends are in good shape as are the king pins, however it was not pleasant ...
