TA Battery Replacement

For those who do not kinow, the TA is fitted with two 6 volt batteries which when joined = 12 volts. They are situated at the rear of the car, under the tonneau box, on either side to give balance. Some years ago, when the batteries failed it took me over a month to find replacements, so I decided t...

Re: 1937 MG TA timing chain cover

Hi Martin, my MPJG engine is strictly standard and does not have a pipe fitting on the timing chain cover. I cannot hazard a guess as to what one is supposed to be for. Re your other posts; I have only just put the floor and seats back into my car, but if you do nor receive any answers, I will be ha...

Re: 1937 MG TA floor plan

Hi Martin, I have spoken with Nick and because of my time committments haven't been able to get together. If you will provide your email and postal address I will send the photos I have taken, as well as the floor plan traced from the boards out of my car. Hope this is acceptable to you. Regards, Ph...

Re: TA Oil Pressure problem

Gentlemen, my TA now has oil pressure, a reading of 59psi. I would like to thank each one of the contributors for your assistance and wise counsel. My first error was an assumption that the pump was actually pumping oil --- it was not. I had just had the engine professionaly rebuilt by a company wit...

Re: TA Oil Pressure problem

Thanks Phil, A couple of questions; my car is still on jack stands. Do you think I could get the same result by putting the car in gear and turning the rear wheel? Should I leave the vaseline in the gear pump or clean it out? Should I disconnect the oil lines or have these bolted into place whilst "...

Re: TA Oil Pressure problem

Gene, Thanks for your early response and suggestion. I am sorry to say that the frustration continues, although I am now pretty sure that the oil pump did not prime. Having decided this I pumped oil through the engine via a pressure tank. This shows oil through the Rockers and overhead gear, as well...

TA Oil Pressure problem

I have just installed my rebuilt MPJG engine, with the plugs out, I tuirned it over about 3 times, checked and primed the oil pump, checked the oil filter and found that this was full. We took the pipe off the top of the oil pump and found that this is pumping oil. But; there is zero oil pressure at...

Re: radiator hose

I replaced mine two days ago. The easiest way is to remove or loosen the two nuts at the bottom of the radiator. Remove the two headlight bracket nuts and bolts and separate these from thesides of the radiator shell. Loosen the two side supports that connect the radiator tank to the firewall and lif...

Re: Clutch Cork

Ian. this is the value of the forum. Different opinions from all over the world! Since 1954 I have relined 4 cork clutches, each with tapered corks. My TA has had three as I always replace the corks if I need to remove the gearbox or motor, and has travelled at least 150,000 miles since then. Wine b...

Re: Clutch Cork

Hi Ian, Another point of view; I have just relined and replaced my clutch, I used tapered corks -- the sort that used to be used in beer bottles, This enables you to push the thin end in and then alternate by pushing the thin side in from the other side. It is essential that you boil the corks. In t...

Re: 1937 MG TA floor plan

Hi Martin, I've currently got the floor out of my TA. What do you actually need to know?
If you need photos I will need your email address as I don't know how to insert them on this forum.
I'm in Sydney and if you have any Kiwi friends over here I will be happy to show them the pieces.

Re: Lost TA engine bolt

Thanks , Gene, Bill and Mike for your input and good advice. I feel like a bit of a fool as following your information, I found the "bolt" attached to the Oil pressure line lying next to the point where it was to go back into the engine. I suppose 15 months since I took it out should allow for my me...

Re: Lost TA engine bolt

Thanks Gene, My first T type was a TD C, the last of the TD's and from memory it WAS possible to prime the oil pump from a hole above the pump itself. My question still stands. Do I simply plug this hole, or does it play some other useful or essential purpose? Keeping in mind that it is NOT an XPAG ...

Lost TA engine bolt

I have just had the MPJG engine returned to me after a complete engine rebuild -- but there is a bolt missing. In the block, directly above the oil pump there is a threaded hole. I think it is 10mm and the thread looks as though it is Metric fine, a thread common to this engine. Can anyone tell me w...

Re: MG TA Steering

Thinking about Ed's comment, you are not dealing with rocket science. In the 1960's I always used a stick with chalk marks and nails hammered into it to align the front tyres. Properly set up, the Bishop's box is very good, but I came out of an era when it wasn't easy to have these repaired and havi...

G'day Matthew, Sorry I won't be able to make the Victorian Natmeet, but I am unable to get in or out of the TA due to Spinal and Hip problems. Hopefully they will be under control by May for the Alvis rally in the Barossa. Thanks for your input re the SA plates. I have a friend in their Sporting Car...

Re: registration plate in Australia

Hi Norman, each State in Australia has a separate number plate design, most of which have changed through the years. In the 1930's through the 40's they were mostly black plates with white letters or numbers. Currently the South Australian plates are white background --- or even yellow! As with most...

Re: Did any TC Have a Brass Body Fuel Pump?

Julian, on page 60 of Mike's book he states that the brass base changed to alloy around TC4407.
Sorry I misread your post. I was referring to the bodies of the carburettors themselves. these were common on TA's as I have already mentioned.

Re: Did any TC Have a Brass Body Fuel Pump?

Hi Julian, I can't give an authoritative answer, but to my knowledge the last T Types to be fitted with brass fuel or carburettor components were 1936 or 1937 TA's. A friend of mine has a narrow winged 1937 car (the same rear guards as a P Type) and this is fitted with brass bodied carburettors. I c...

Planning to return to Sydney via the Great Ocean Road, thence to Melbourne to visit my family (I was educated at MBHS in Sou...
