Re: MG TA1932 in Germany - Blog - all problems and ...

Hello Franz, So happy to see someone follow through with this type of hard top. Several years ago I thought I might try a project such as you are doing but I only got a far as a profile drawing and some 3/4 sketches over a photo. I’m not sure if this animated gif will work (some sites convert them t...

Re: TA/TB Scuttle Holes

Tim, The Slow Run cable goes through the small P-clip on the right and the Mixture (choke) cable goes through the one on the left. (As seen looking forward from under the dash.) And they go through the holes in the bulkhead above the steering column in that same order. At least that’s the way it is ...

Ahhh, that door.
Sorry, Tim, for the misunderstanding. And thanks for clearing it up Tom. (I think I’ve seen that image!) :)
There’s also a diagram showing how they were folded here: http://www.billdavis.org/MGTA/Original.html
Cheers,

Re: TB Trim-Side Screen Strap(s)

Hello Tim, I’ve not seen any photos of TAs with 2 straps but did correspond with a fellow in NZ who thought he had an original set of screens for a TB. His images only showed a single strap. The jury is out on whether they were indeed original. The Rexine door panels on my TA are original and there ...

Re: FRONT WHEEL CYLINDER TA TC

Hello John, Your photo looks a lot like those on my TA. I haven’t a spare to check thread size however. TAs use an adapter between the cylinder and the hose but I believe the cylinder end of the hose for TA is larger than the TC hose end. Still, an adapter for the TA wheel cylinder may be available ...

Re: Mg ta engine rebuild

Valkyrja, My MPJG flywheel didn’t want to come off either. I can’t remember exactly, but I may have had the spigot bearing removed when I used a puller. I fashioned it from two pieces of angle iron, a couple of spacers (copper pipe) and a re-configured puller from a Harbor Freight set. I used a copp...

Re: Rear wings and tank fitting.

Hello Ray,
Tom Wilson may have factory photos of the production line showing which was installed first to the TC.

On the early TA the tank was installed first as in this photo.

Setting square on the chassis, as Chris says, should simplify the installation.
Regards, Bill

Re: history of my tc part 2

Yes, Robert, not Trevor’s TC but I thought from your description it might be (his) Jim’s black TC. When I visited it was at his home and was not in his shops so I’ve little knowledge of the workplaces. I have photos of a couple of other car he restored here somewhere; Morgan? and a white MG YT that ...

Re: history of my tc part 2

It’s nice to see ‘Krek’s’ name in print again! He was a good friend and you are fortunate, Trevor, to have an example of his work as a restorer. He helped immensely when I restored my J2 back in the ‘70s by supplying detail photos of an unmolested Swept Wing J2 he’d bought that had sat in storage fo...

Rob,
I don't believe those holes you've marked are original to the TA.

Rob,

Have a look at http://www.billdavis.org/MGTA/Original.html scroll down to the radiator info.
It won’t answer all your questions but hope it will help some.

Re: Police MGTA

Did the TA police car even have a glove box door?

Mike Allison’s ‘Magic of MG’ shows the interior of a prewar police car but it doesn’t specifically say that it is a TA.

Notice the shift knob is not as used on the TA. Might that be an XPAG gearbox making that car a TB?

Re: Pinion diff bearing #18

Hello Chris, I used tapered bearings (sourced locally) for the pinion shaft on the last 2 diffs I rebuild. Some shimming is required with tapered bearings but no machining necessary when using the thick shims. See Roger Furneaux’s manual here; https://fromtheframeup.com/uploads/TT_CH110_Differential...

Re: best manual

Rod, Actually the black book you have is not the Bentley they refer to. Here are links to the book. The green book (1st link) is a later edition of the book in the second link https://www.amazon.com/MG-Workshop-Manual-1929-1955-Maintenance/dp/0837617464 https://jollyrogersmotors.com/store/p/1130-Com...

Re: best manual

Rod,
In addition to those books Chris and others have listed I’d suggest a copy of ‘Tuning and Maintenance of M.G.s’ by Philip H. Smith.

And yes, most books you find are indeed going to be “a bit light on TA info.”
Good luck and happy reading.

Re: TC air cleaner repair

Mark, Some years ago I removed the end of my air filter to clean it. If I remember correctly I used a screw driver or some other flat punch and went around the crimped edge of the 'top' until it popped off. My filter also has some dents but they’re not too bad and not being concerned about anyone ju...

Re: MPJG Spin on oil filters

Hello Jon, If I’m not mistaken Mick Pay’s Filter Conversion (for both early and late TA) uses the Austin/Morris Metro head. This would be the older style Metro and not the Rover Metro which has a different engine. Does the marking on your housing read 12A2023? If so I also use this same spin-on filt...

Head size 5/16 BSF. cover through front mounting plate..Three used……..M8x1, length 15mm. Bolt 5mm unthreaded. Head size 5/16...

Re: MPJG Fastener Size

Steve,
I’m a little late in finding this but according to a list compiled by Bob Butson the MPJG Timing Cover uses 8 - 1MM 3/4” long bolts. He also gives part numbers from Moss (320-260) and Abingdon Spares (Use 3 - 39).
Cheers,

Re: MG TA Torque settings for replacing the head

Martin, In the early days when I didn’t know any better I probably exceeded 45/48 lb. on the head but now consider myself lucky I didn’t damage the block. After I rebuilt the engine some 12 years ago I torqued the head to 35 lb (new head gasket). Since that time the head has been off a couple of tim...
