Doug Pelton at From the Frame Up sells a nice kit to replace the old, corroded tank filter.

Re: Checking Water Passages

You could also punch out a few core plugs to display the internal condition. You probably won't, but if you find a lot of crud, remove them all and flush with air or a hose and water.

Re: Horn Button function & originality

Cars I have had in the workshop that indicated any originality, had the large-button switch. Every time I have seen the small button version, it looked significantly newer. I have seen the small-button version in old red Lucas boxes, but that may not mean anything, like replacement ignition switches...

Re: Torque settings

I assume you mean the bell-housing to the block? Those are M8x1.0 bolts, so 32 foot-pounds is fine into the block. The lower bolts go into the aluminum sump which is tender, so I would use the lower figure there, with either lock-washers or thread-locker. Check the sump threaded holes carefully, as ...

Re: Oil Pump

An excellent discussion of checking and rebuilding an oil pump is the information sheet supplied by Moss Motors with their kit. It is also readable by going to their on-line catalog, and clicking the icon by the oil pump kit - they give all the necessary specs to check.

That's a common and disconcerning, but not serious clatter with Arnolt covers - if you inspect the inside of the cover you will most likely see where the rockers have been making contact with the side of the cover. As Steve wisely suggests (as always), shifting the cover with the bakelite nuts loose...

Re: XPAG and XPEG Head gasket dimensions

Duncan - I believe you refer to EX-176, a 1,466cc dry-deck engine used at the 1954 Bonneville Land Speed Record attempt, when a streamliner with that engine went over 153MPH. Racers like Ken Miles also used that engine, and some racers still do - Steve Konson and Don Martine, for two. MG made all th...

Re: XPAG and XPEG Head gasket dimensions

There are early and late XPAG engines, with oblong or round cooling passages, so you must distinguish between the two, no matter where you go. There are copper-gasket suppliers (Hussey Copper in Pennsylvania) who already have patterns, so there is no need to re-invent the wheel. Also try headgasket....

And another hand to hold the throttle wide open as you do the compression test... After you have done the compression test, .squirt a tablespoon of oil in each cylinder and do another test. If you get a significantly higher reading, it will indicate you have worn rings. A leak-down test is far bette...

Chances are you have turned a cap so the bore is no longer true. Obviously the rear can only go one way, so check the witness marks on the other two to show which way the caps should go.

Re: oil filter canister leak

What you have is an after-market replacement filter housing probably sold by Moss back in the day, when replacement sock-type filters were available. When available now, they are expensive. The FAR better solution is to get a spin-off filter unit from Abingdon, Moss or Bob Grunau, which will not onl...

There were a handful of oil filters supplied as original and as after-market, and some detailing of which you have is needed.
