Re: Camshaft comprehension

I understand your confusion; part of the problem is that there are many different names for many different cams. Everyone will have different names for "their" cam, and in the past 70 years there have been dozens -if not more - cam grinders, each of whom has "his favorite" grind, usually some slight...

Re: I think it's TA

The "TA" part of the Guarantee plate has been overstamped "TC", but the engine part of the plate is still stamped MPJG, either 1530 or 1536; the image was poor. Very definitely a TA. TA's generally are worth more in the UK, where they are eligible for pre-war racing classes that don't really exist o...

Re: fixing specs

I assume you are talking about a TC? There is a spec book 259, which lists literally every bolt, nut and part on a TC. It is a factory book not intended for the general public, and is very hard to use - un-indexed. Copies, some better and some worse, do exist; the original is very very rare. Doug Pe...

Re: Sourcing Rexine Modern Equivalent UK

I wrote imprecisely above, and was rightly corrected. The basic form of Rexine was used from the TC into the TD, and the later leather-textured cloth is only found on the later TD. Precision is so important, isn't it?

Re: Sourcing Rexine Modern Equivalent UK

Remember also that there are two distinct types of dash fabric. There is much discussion in the archives... Early dashes used a warp-and-weft weave Rexine without texture. Later dashes used material with a distinctive leather-like impressed texture. In general, people have found the closest substitu...

Re: Transmission oil

Like so many things in life, opinions will differ...

I use Redline MT90 inb my TC transmission, and find it helps shifting considerably. Whatever you use, make sure it is GL-4 and not GL-5. The latter will damage the brass parts in the transmission.

I believe you need ES needles; slightly richer ones are EM needles. Bew sure your floats are properly adjusted; I still use the old 7/16 adjustment, and it has alway been OK.

Steve - my "regular" Whit sockets are too tall, and I found a 19/32" socket at the Tool Barn to cut down, for $1. It's now a dedicated socket!

Re: Replacing Blown Head Gasket

Almost ANY technique is better than the usual torque-and-you're-done method. First, consider possible causes: the wrong torque is used, the block is not flat, the head is not flat, the head studs are stretched. First, remove the head studs and check their condition - most are stretched or gouged. Sc...

Re: chassis font size and name?

In the 70's I looked into identifying a font for a set of number stamps from the 1930's, - the very elderly and long-retired engineering maker wrote me that number stamps were usually unique for their application, unlike letter-font stamps which were based on a more common sans-serif design. The mak...

Re: Rebuilding the Oil Pump

The problem is that there is a Woodruf key in the driving shaft, digging into the bronze bush when you just try to beat out the gear. You need to drive the gear off the shaft a bit, put spacers under the gear and drive it off a bit more, and more spacers until the gear comes free. Then remove the ke...

I have said it before and will say it again - if your shock fluid needs replenishing, the shock needs to be rebuilt.
