Re: 1948 tc vin?
If you have a replacement TD engine and missing Guarantee plate, you have nothing on which to go if you can find no chassis number. Do you perhaps have some old insurance paperwork with a different number, or a registration? Did some earlier owner write any numbers on an owner's manual, or shop manu...

Re: Cylinder Head water gaskets
Steve - I think you are right. I should have made clear that paper gaskets are what I supply with my guaranteed-flat stainless plates at the back of the head - since the stamped factory plates are often warped, they might require a cork gasket to seal well. I highly value hearing different perspecti...

Re: Cylinder Head water gaskets
Original is paper up front, cork at the rear. But I have found that using cork at the rear is a mistake. The cork gaskets tend to compress unevenly and break down, and so I use paper gaskets in both places, without leaks. I supply only paper gaskets with my stainless steel plates for the rear of the...

Re: 1948 tc vin?
Bob - what is the engine number, from the brass octagon on the left side of the bell-housing? As Steve suggests, the engine you have in the car can certainly be connected with A car, but not necessarily YOUR car - many engines were replaced at some point. You should hope, however, is that the engine...

Re: Cylinder Head Stud Torque
Don't see any reason why not, as I have heard of water leaks there. I've never had one, but there is always something new to be experienced! Compound would probably also act like a lubricant while tightening, so no thread oil would be necessary.

Re: Cylinder Head Stud Torque
I sell special ARP head studs, far superior to the originals or what is available today (Manley Ford and other racers use them with total confidence). My studs have two added features: an extra quarter inch of threads to accommodate heads that have been skimmed multiple times, and a hex in the upper...

Re: TC3995 on Copart in San Berdoo
I hope nobody misunderstands me - I completely agree that the car IS saveable, and I very much hope it DOES get saved. But based on the realities of supply, demand, the extent and type of damage, and pricing of MG cars right now, in the long run it seems unlikely to me. I have mentioned elsewhere a ...

Re: TC3995 on Copart in San Berdoo
I absolutely agree that it COULD be repaired and gotten back on the road, but in this day and age, with prices low, costs high, and a plentiful supply of cars (I have turned down 2 complete but rough TC's in the last month for $6k, and $8k), I think there is, at best, a 30% chance that anyone WOULD ...

Re: TC3995 on Copart in San Berdoo
Here's what I wrote on another forum: Is it called Alfy because it has Alfin drums? The engine number would make it TC3995. In this market they would be lucky to get $10k for it. I would say that the tub is marginal/doubtful at best, especially with the amount of wood that would need fitting and rep...

TC3995 on Copart in San Berdoo
Does anyone recognize this badly burned TC being sold at auction? It would be intereting (and sad) to hear the back-story on its present condition.

Re: Spare tire cover
If you can't find a commercial one, a local canvas-upholstery guy can easily make one from scratch. Anyone who can make a Bimini top for a boat can make a spare tire cover. Just know what you want - how to hold it on the tire, whether you want piping, etc.

If you know the bore diameter, the piston type (flat-top or domed), and recorded the head thickness when you did that work, you can get a pretty close approximation.

Re: Camshaft comprehension
MOWOG cams are identified by a series of rings on the end. Crane cams are golden in color. That's about all you can identify. Ask people which tires you should get, which motor oil, which electronic ignition, etc. etc. There are so many cams and grinds that you will get dozens of opinions. And there...

Re: Camshaft comprehension
I call it the 019 cam because the valve setting is .019", just as the 012 cam uses .012" valve setting.
With many cam grinders out there, both past and present, there are far more than 19 different cams!

Re: Camshaft comprehension
Properly hardening and treating the reground cam is a part of the operation, as it is with re-done tappets. The last cam I had re-ground was $225, and has some 10,000 miles on it without a problem. It is always possible there was a bad one in the batch, but I've never had one. Tom Lange MGT Repair

Re: Camshaft comprehension
Overheating is unlikely to be caused by the 0002 cam, or by ANY cam alone - it's a function more of how the distributor is set for ignition at the proper moment. And everyone will have their favorite cam - mine is the RV re-grind from Delta Cam. But ask 25 people and you will be 19 different answers...

Re: Camshaft comprehension
Sorry - I just re-read the 6-month old post on overheating, and see that I covered much the same ground then as now. At least I am consistent! Your early description of spluttering and boiling might have led me to suggest the head gasket is incorrectly installed - it looks the same both ways, but yo...

Re: Camshaft comprehension
I don't remember reading about your overheating issue. Basically you have 5 areas of concern: internal build-up of sludge and rust to slow and block water circulation, reduced water pump function or an internal leak, overheating caused by thermostat malfunction, radiator issues, and overheating caus...
