Re: A record?

Looks good. Love the blue. It must stick to the road good with those fat tires/wheels!

Re: Tompkins steering box upgrade

Have you inspected/replaced the sector shaft peg that engages the worm? Old one can easily be pressed out, and a new one pressed in. Also, the uniquely sized ball that goes on the end of the drop arm wears much faster than the other (different size) end link balls. You mentioned adjusting the link e...

Re: Tompkins steering box upgrade

The steering box was changed for the TD & TF because they wanted to go with rack and pinion. End of story. A ball bearing on top of the sector shaft does not sound like a Tomkins kit. Got some pictures to share? Everybody with a VW box thinks they are the best thing since sliced bread, but I have to...

Re: Front Hub Bearings, Again!

With the old hubs off the car, press in the bearings. Once pressed in check them for any movement at all between the outer race and the hub. The way they (hubs) wear out, often they will seem to press in with a normal amount of force, but once in the hub it becomes apparent that they are actually no...

Re: Gearbox woes..

Never heard of those popping out unless the transmission was taken apart. TC transmissions are bulletproof. Check #77 & 78 on moss catalog//gearbox and figure someone had it apart and missed loading those parts back in. https://mossmotors.com/mg-tc-td-tf/clutch-gearbox-drivetrain/gearbox-driveshaft/...

Norman, did you lose oil? I was always leery of those modified rear main seal kits

Re: Front Hub Bearings, Again!

How many miles on your hubs? Are they old? The hubs are a high wear item if not adjusted correctly. No way to fix them once worn. The hubs wear where the bearings fit into the hub.

Re: TC Shock Spacer?

Tom Wilson did an article in TC Motoring Guild http://www.tcmotoringguild.org/chassis/11MayMidget.pdf where the spacers are shown and sized. The article in the resources section of this site does not mention or show them. http://www.mg-tabc.org/library/luvax.htm

Re: TC Shock Spacer?

shock.jpg shocks2.jpg I rebuilt these 5 years ago using the double lip seal method. Whatever it is, there is no gap, and when prodded by the tip of an icepick-- it does not want to rotate. Late 1949 production, if that matters. I suppose it might be part of the original arm? All four are the same.

Re: Oil filter and supply lines color

I've long suspected that the special spark plug wire covering that certain people claim was original on TC's was nonsense.

Chris, don't forget that the factory installed chromed bumpers on 494 TC EXU's.

Re: Oil filter and supply lines color

That same third pic is on page 109 of "The Immortal T Series" by Chris Harvey. Toms provided pic is much clearer. When expanded it appears the spark plug wires are of the type with a plain black rubber outer covering. Safety wire on the oil pump outlet line fitting, etc.

Re: TC front axle bump stop clearance

To add info to the apparent spec's supplied in the Buell article, I lifted at frame to get a front wheel off the ground and got 2 3/8 distance. When I dropped the car back down, the gap was then 3/4 inch. The earlier mentioned figure was obtained as the car sat after a drive, or "settled." justdropp...

Re: Brake query..

Offhand, it sounds like the rear brakes may be adjusted way too far out, and the fronts too far in. When you adjust each wheels brake, be sure the wheel is turning.

What your pedal feel like? Front brake lines can be tricky to bleed on the TC.

Re: TC front axle bump stop clearance

John, the Buell article is in the "resources" section on this site, and most of us have used it as a reference. http://www.mg-tabc.org/library/Buell-TC-Frontend-3rd-ed.pdf When I was doing my front end about 5 years ago I used it from this site and was confused about the then 2nd edition which state...

Re: TC front axle bump stop clearance

Well lubed leaf springs keep moisture and dirt and rust from getting in between. As Ray points out, it will extend life. The old argument about grease/oil attracting dirt and sand falls flat when you know about gaiters or tape or twine wraps. The gaiters and wraps keep the oil in the springs, and ke...

Original rubber piece on my stops now measures around 1.9 inches (not including plate). Curious what the replacement ones are measuring?

Re: TC front axle bump stop clearance

bump.jpg Rubber stops are known original on TC9866, but they did need to be re-glued (gorilla glue) when I did mechanical resto a few years back. Springs are original low miles, and have been taken apart and cleaned etc and re-greased. No teflon strips. Gap I measure is .4 inch, and dead even on ea...
