Re: Transmission oil
I drained the 75W140NS redline after the last TC drive and replaced it with MT90. Straight. Went for a lengthy drive in 80 plus degree temps yesterday and I can report a distinct improvement. Thanks for the good tip, Tom. Maybe it is true about all that sulfur not agreeing with synchro's?

Re: sill plates TC
Nice to see people making the effort to not "bling" the car with items that are simply incorrect. Scuff plates is a good description, because if a door starts to sag it will start to scuff the plate. I think the TA or TB had writing on their scuff plates, as did the TD?

Original TC sill plates were all plain. No writing.

Re: Sourcing Rexine Modern Equivalent UK
TC's never used anything but the plain woven type rexine on the dash. TC9866 retains the original rexine dash. Hard to get a good pic, but it more resembles a very lightweight canvas. I would be inclined to look into cotton canvas, wash it and dry it, and then "paint" it. Something like 7oz regular ...

Re: Causes behind hinge post bottom rot
Is it just a coincidence that area of rot on the upright you guys are talking about is in the back corners of the floorboards? Not sure where water would collect on a rainy day, but it seems like a likely spot. Perhaps an argument for loose fitting floorboards back there? Does anybody use "ethylene ...

Re: Transmission oil
I found the straight weight 140's foamed like crazy in the TC transmission. SO much that you could not even check the level.
I think I will drain the Redline NS and try the MT90 as Tom suggests.

Re: Transmission oil
I think you just answered your own question on Royal Purple. Lucas Oil is another one that tests badly on the D-130 test and would never pass the Mil-spec or GL4 standard (which both require a very good rating from the D-130 test). As I stated early on, the label on the Redline 75W140NS states it HA...

Re: Transmission oil
Do not trust a label just because it says "yellow metal friendly." Most any oil is safe for yellow metals as long as it is fresh. If it is not labelled as having passed GL4 or MIL-PRF-2105E it simply is not yellow metal friendly in the long term. Royal Purple, for instance, has a line of GL5 gear oi...

Re: Transmission oil
When it comes to yellow metal friendly oils, Tom is correct in that GL4 oils are less corrosive when they get worn out/acidic, because they start out with less sulfur compounds as EP additive. The Redline 75W140NS oil Steve suggests is GL5 and stinks of sulfur, but it also has listed on the label a ...

Re: Later SU carbs
John, as I said early on, most people have found the K&N pancake filters to be overly restrictive in the H2's on the XPAG engine. When you get the correct standard needles it will probably become obvious that the K&N pancakes are no good for this application. Using the K&N pancakes with the standard...

Re: Later SU carbs
What do the plugs look like? Did the car come from high altitude? If it runs better with K&N pancakes then you probably have the lean needles. You may end up with the correct richer needles and doing away with the K&N's.

Steve- the decals are neat, but the real treasures are the intact elements. Those are almost always missing, or toast. Very well made.

Re: Later SU carbs
How does it run with the K&N filters removed? I have heard a number of tales about how the H2's do not like K&N filter media because they restrict air intake. Only pancake filters I have ever run with H2's are some vintage Hellings and Stellings with the original perforated steel outer and inner and...

Re: Replacing Blown Head Gasket
WKF Wood says nothing is needed on the gasket. Top of page II-11 or page 17. http://www.ttalk.info/WKF-Wood-XPAG-Engine-Book.pdf I recently used nothing. You definitely do need to check your head for flatness. The reason the gasket often blows between 2 and 3 is because on these engines the head wan...

Re: 5 Speed gearbox
Just a note, most suggest the 5 spd be used with stock 5.125:1 rear end. I run a stock 5.125 and TC stock transmission, but use slightly larger 30" OD Model A tires, which in effect gives about equivalent of a 4.8:1 rear end. Only thing to add about Model A tires is the ones I got (Universal brand m...

Re: ARP Flywheel Bolts Available - MGT Repair
Should sell a lot of those. Holes a definite plus. I like how Tom tells what alloy is being used, like on the 300 stainless thermostat housing and the (also) 8740 head studs, and main cap studs.
