timandgerda's photo also shows the way the bull horn curves around the inner guard and, with a 90 degree bend, attaches to the side piece.

Australia/New Zealand. Maybe this is what is being recalled (but sorry for the ads, etc.).

Re: MGTC battery charging

I gather that you do not have a voltmeter. Would make diagnosis a lot easier.

Do you have the correct wattage bulb in the ignition light circuit and is the resistance wire intact around the bulb holder? Wrong resistance in the warning light circuit can lead to misleading behaviour.

Re: 1949 TC gap between the running boards and rear wings.

Douglas, is there a reason that you ask this question? I am wondering because, in building up my TC from a bunch of (related) parts, I found that I had a gap of a couple of centimetres. I understand that there should be "no" gap. I had to extend my boards. I will be interested in others replies.

Re: Mixture Adjustment on TC with Twin SU 1 1/4 Carbs

Others will be more expert but your needles are almost certainly not 156's. I think that is the diameter of the part that goes into the piston (0.156 inches). The needle is identified by a pair of capital letters. From memory, ES is standard for the TC. It is stamped on that same part that is lodged...

Re: Source of updated water pump?

Hi Norm and XPAGnut. Norm, I attempted to cover myself re soluble oil and hoses by adding the phrase "depending on their composition". Silicone hoses would be fine. XPAGnut, no, the Type B standard is specifically for products that have no deliberate antifreeze/antiboil effect. That is, they are gly...

Re: Source of updated water pump?

Sorry XPAGnut I have been on other duties. Also, being located in Australia, my answer may not help you very much. We have a formal Australian technical standard for automotive coolants. As explained in this link https://www.nulon.com.au/support/what-is-meant-by-type-a-and-type-b-coolant it divides ...

Re: Source of updated water pump?

XPAGnut, my question was whether or not you need freeze protection. How low do your ambients go? Unfortunately the effect of a 50/50 mix of ethylene glycol/water on heat transfer is not minute. The heat transfer coefficient from a hot surface to the fluid is approximately halved compared with straig...

Re: Source of updated water pump?

XPAGnut, where do you live? Do you need antifreeze in your cooling system? If not, I would suggest you consider using just a corrosion inhibitor. The main ingredient in traditional coolants is ethylene glycol and it transfers heat less efficiently than plain water. Engines run hotter with it. Hope t...

I must admit that I was presuming a distributor with both mechanical and vacuum advance, which I understand is the usual design if vacuum is employed.

Re: Vacuum advance distributor?

While not an expert it seems to me there is some confusion. As I understand it, a standard vacuum advance set-up, plumbed from downstream of the carb butterflies, will always add to the mechanical advance when it operates. I do not see how it would ever retard the spark in any sense - relative or ab...

Re: door striker plate.

My technique (based on a single car) was: 1. Take all lock hardware and trim off - door and post - and, as Norman says, make sure that the door shuts correctly all round. 2. Attach lock to the door, still with no post hardware, and shut the door fully. 3. Insert "wedge" onto lock tongue on the door,...

Re: Brake Failure

Norm, for air to leak in fluid does not have to leak out IMHO. The fluid level can just rise. As Steve says, it does not need much air to render the pedal soft. Jim, you said that the pedal returned like a rocket. This may be a contributor to your problem. If you did a very hard application in a car...

Example of some of what Steve said. Maybe also consider twin spares on the back - not common but known.

Perhaps someone can translate the caption.

Re: Fitting wing piping to scuttle or dashboard

Re the piping above the dash, and if we are talking about the upholstered piping, not the chromed strip - and if I am remembering correctly - I don't think there is a decision to be made - it really has to be the scuttle. This is because the piping continues on down the inside of the body to the top...

Re: Vapor lock

Sorry, can't send a photo at the moment. The usual leak shows up as wet fuel at the lowest part of the carbs where the choke levers attach (not the fuel bowls). These levers attach to the lower ends of the jets - the slim metal cylinders with yokes on the bottom end, where the choke lever attaches v...

Re: Vapor lock

Jeff I had waited for someone more expert to answer your question but here goes. To me, a few seconds of ticking as you describe is quite normal for a car that has stood a little while, provided it stops! It is almost the signature of these cars (and others with SU pumps and carbs). I don't believe ...

Re: Vapor lock

I would disconnect the fuel hose coming out of the pump, immediately downstream of the right-angle fitting on the pump outlet, and attach a length of clear plastic pipe to that fitting. Hold it reasonably vertical, reach over the screen and turn on the ignition. You will see (and hear) almost immedi...

Re: Rear brakes are "hanging"

According to the chart in the Brown Book, the correct lube is chassis grease (unless you were using Castrol lubricants when it was "Castrolease Brake Cable Grease"). In today's terminology it should be a grease of NLGI #2 consistency. IMHO don't use one with solids in it (e.g.molybdenum disulfide or...

Out of interest, what was the pattern on the other side when you reversed the turning direction? I acknowledge that near the inner edge is much preferable to the outer but in doing mine recentl...
