Re: Rebuilding TC5560

And you think we have a problem with our T cars! More seriously, I think the only material reason to insulate the exhaust manifold is to protect the fuel system, including the carburetors, from the heat. Most else is negative - e.g. more back pressure and more heat retained in the head - at least in...

Re: MGTC transmission removal

I have removed mine several times via the cockpit with the engine in place. I do not believe it can be taken out through the bottom

Cannot advise you on the firewall as mine is not in place.

Re: Fill level for Girling Dampers on TC

Marv, again I may still see underlying agreement. From his first post in this thread - and from his rebuild log (3 June) - I interpreted Norm's comment on the level dropping as his experience after a refill, not a top up. I do acknowledge that this thread is on top up and that his comment was direct...

Re: Fill level for Girling Dampers on TC

There may actually be furious agreement going on here. IMHO there is a big difference between a small top-up and a complete refill. In a refill of an empty shock, because of the geometry of the compression chambers, it is inevitable that there will be some air pockets trapped. This air has to be eli...

Here is one off Ebay. Still not entirely clear re the stop but this one seems to be resting a little further clockwise.

Re: Dash and Gauges

Yes Marv, I don't claim X-ray vision. However, while we are now all looking at the face, is the needle resting on the wrong side of the stop?

Re: Dash and Gauges

If my eyes are to be believed, that gauge is one for oil temperature. If you are interpreting it as oil pressure then you may be a little alarmed.

Re: Recomended lubricants

We may as well try to clear up another small misunderstanding. Marketers can formulate their oils in any way they please. However they can only claim that they meet specific industry specs if they comply with the full specification, including in some cases limitations on particular chemicals. Use of...

Re: Recomended lubricants

Gene, I was responding mainly to Kameron's two statements that the XPAG engine "was originally designed with a thick multi-weight oil in mind" and "it was designed at a time when ZDDP was added to most oils for extra protection of the metal internals, and that practice is no longer (the case?)". IMH...

Re: Recomended lubricants

Oil choice is for some reason the most controversial subject. I usually stay quiet but I just cannot let the comments by Kameron M pass. At the time that the XPAG engine was designed there was no such thing as a multigrade engine oil on the market and the amount of zinc dithiophosphate added was min...

Re: Direction of tapered bolts locking kingpins

I was unable to find any spec for the steering lock. I set it at 25 degrees turn in for the "outside" wheel - that is for the RH wheel when turning left and the LH wheel when turning right. I based this on a calculation from the wheel base (94 inches) and turning circle (37 feet, quoted in various s...

Further on this, what is the spec for steering lock? I need to reset my stop bolts on both hubs.

Direction of tapered bolts locking kingpins

Does it matter which direction the tapered bolts (cotter pins?) are inserted? I have just renewed the kingpins and bushes on my 48 TC. The tapered bolts were inserted from the front but I think I have read the correct direction is from the rear. They do not appear to play any part in limiting steeri...

Re: Hub to half shaft weld broken

I agree with Dirk. Overfilling did not cause your breakage so don't kick yourself. If it helps, and while others may not agree, for many of us the only reason we can give advice on a particular issue is because we have made the same mistake at some time in the past. Hope your car turns up safely.

Re: Hub to half shaft weld broken

Minor in comparison to your other problems but, when you filled the diff, did you fill it to the bottom of the filler plug hole or to the level of the other plug, located lower on the diff casing? If filled to the fill plug level, oil will be in the axle housings.

Re: Hub to half shaft weld broken

Agreed Steve - I was only proposing welding (if that is all that has failed but I doubt it) as the simplest way to get mobile again in Peter's circumstances.

Re: Hub to half shaft weld broken

It is possible that you may have more damage than just a break of the weld that was attaching the half shaft to the hub splines. As Steve W said as the first responder, I don't believe that if that were the only failure the wheel would wobble excessively, provided the spinner was tight. The weld is ...

Yes Antijam - it was meant to be CH201. Sorry, but it was close to midnight here when I typed it! Doug Pelton at FTFU sells a shim set - from memory 2x 5 thou, 1x 10 thou.

Re: Bearing " NIP " on TC rear wheel bearings

I don't think the Sherrell book gives a measurement. Doug Pelton in Tech Article CH101 says 4 thou minimum with no gasket or gasket thickness plus 4 thou. Depends, in my experience, on how smooth, etc. your hub flanges, etc. are. As stated, in my case I needed more than 6 thou to ensure clamping on ...
