Re: Bearing " NIP " on TC rear wheel bearings

Kameron, if you study a hub you will note that it has a shortish, pipe stub-like, cylindrical portion projecting inboard of the flange. The diameter of this "pipe stub" matches that of the outer race of the bearing. It is there to clamp the bearing into place when the brake drum nuts are tightened. ...

Re: TC top replacement

If you can sight a copy, Malcolm Green's book 'T Series Restoration' give a comprehensive coverage of the fitting process for the entire hood, with a lot of detail on the front rail including a sectional sketch - pages 121-124.

Re: antifreeze

Bob, I agree that Dow may have a vested interest but I think that the physical chemistry is not particularly controversial. Here is another summary. http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/ethyl ... d_904.html

I fully agree with your caution on OAT-based long-life products.

Re: antifreeze

This site may help. http://www.dow.com/heattrans/support/selection/ethylene-vs-propylene.htm The big advantage of propylene glycol is its much lower toxicity than ethylene glycol. Almost all other properties, from the old car perspective, are worse. Both products, if used neat, potentially increase ...

A further error in the early TC wiring diagrams

I have discovered - the hard way - a further error in what I understand are the wiring diagrams in the Brown Book for the earlier TCs - the book where the wiring diagrams are printed as about Fig 50. They are the diagrams that Doug Pelton shows on his FTFU website in his Tech Tip EL960, Errors in th...

Re: Seat trim problem

Ian, I had hoped that someone more knowledgeable would respond. I upholstered my TC myself. My seat back sits pretty much as per your original photos. The trim piping around the cutout sits well clear of the transmission tunnel at the front and the board at the back clears the tunnel by a significan...

I think that antijam was/is talking about the top stay in his photo. I had the same initial reaction that he was concerned over the bottom one. But he does say LH stay.

Re: Differential pinion hub removal details

Hi Duncan, perhaps the question now is not the condition of the "good" bearing but the condition of the shaft it sat on. Is it in such good nick because it has not been doing much work, the bearing turning on the shaft? Probably not, as the R&Ms appear to have been very good bearings but how tight a...

Re: Tacking Strip

There are pictures on p.114 and 115 of MG T Series Restoration Guide by Malcolm Green. He states "The rear hood rail is screwed to the rear of the body, after folding the ends round and trapping them under the rail". The ends he is talking about are the ends of the Rexine/PVC covering. I did all of ...

Re: Sandblasting Wheel Rims

I am very much with the non-blasters here. I built my TC up a couple of years ago from a pile of parts and panels that had been sitting around in someone's garage for at least 45 years. On some panels there were eight distinct paint layers. The car was originally black, had been primered and repaint...

Re: Differential pinion hub removal details

Duncan, I have just done this job. However I took the opportunity to switch to tapered rollers. It is possible to do it with the diff in the car if you are doing a straight replacement of the original bearings and are confident that you will not have to re-shim to get the engagement of the pinion an...

Re: TC 1/2 Shaft Kit Installation

I was hoping someone who has actually done this might answer but, if I understand what you are saying, the half shaft is a free sliding fit in the diff - which it also should be - but also it is a free sliding fit in the outer hub - which it should not be. It should need to be pressed in, to the cor...

Re: TC 1/2 shaft stuck!

Hard to describe but in recently overhauling my diff I found that, on both sides, the outer part of the hub was solidly stuck to the inner part (bearing housing). I put the brake drum on backwards, then the spinner. I then used three short lengths of threaded bar through three of the stud holes in t...

Re: Fuel pump loses prime

Well, as tends to be the way, I thought that I had found the problem. Careful observation revealed a weep at the union, under the car, between the rear fuel pipe from the tank and the front one to the pump. Tightening made it worse so drained the tank, pulled the union apart, found the solder holdin...

Re: Fuel pump loses prime

Thanks all. Marv, I have blown the line back to the tank and checked the inlet filter numbers of times and I don't think that is the problem. Duncan, I have reset the diaphragm several times, using both the manual technique and the "power" technique. However I might try that again now that the diaph...

Fuel pump loses prime

My 48 TC has its "original" SU fuel pump, albeit with all new innards. It seems to pump well and has no trouble keeping up the fuel to the carbs. However, if I don't drive the car for 24-36 hours it fails to pump fuel. Operates OK - in fact at very high speed - but is obviously dry and cannot develo...

Re: TC distributor filling with oil

Murph, it seems you have your answer. But if you are looking for something to do, a compression test cold, followed by a little engine oil in each cylinder - applied to cylinder walls if possible, not the dead centre of the pistons - and a repeat test may tell the story succinctly.

Just caught up with this one. Murph, you say that the motor blows smoke at the exhaust when you connect the air cleaner. With the air cleaner off, is there pressure at the vent hole in the rocker cover?
