Norman - remember that the more frequently you re-torque the head, the less likely you are to have head gasket issues. There is a good deal of expanding, contracting and settling that takes place in the first thousand miles.

Re: Rebore sizes
I've done two engines at +.100": one needed sleeves as the boring bar broke through into the water passage; the other worked just fine. I had the second block ultrasound tested to verify that there was enough meat there - if you plan to go +.100", it is worth doing that. I would also look around for...

Re: Gearbox woes..
I would NOT continue to drive the car, but remove the transmission and determine what it needs. If you had lost such parts from the engine, would you continue to drive the car? Are you happy with the gearing? If so, a 5-speed will be little benefit. You can do the same thing by installing a Morris m...

Re: Oil filter and supply lines color
Occam's razor suggests that the entire engine and ancillaries would have been entirely painted. We all know about the use of prototype or sample images for factory press materials; the factory Mark II TD sales brochure shows bucket seats and brake air scoops, for instance. Is it possible that this T...

Re: Oil filter and supply lines color
I'm mighty surprised to see the sump and bell housing not painted! I thought for sure that they were painted with the rest of the engine. Could TD parts be differently handled? I know I have seen "virgin" TD engines with the remains of red paint in both those locations. Sorry for providing incorrect...

Re: Oil filter and supply lines color
First, the original oil filter on a TC was a throw-away metal can, and the cans I have are all aftermarket cans, painted grey or orange. I don't know if a MOWOG replacement filter came in a color, off the shelf. I doubt it was engine color. If your can is aluminum, it is probably a Moss or similar 2...

Re: Rebuilding XPAG 9204
Your oil pump driven gear shaft is correctly installed, and is supposed to be quite tight in the block. You removed it properly! I had to take a sharp pair of pliers to the one shaft that had been incorrectly installed; it quite ruined it (but it needed replacement anyway).

Re: Rebuilding XPAG 9204
There is a good description of what is needed to rebuild the oil pump in the Moss Motors information sheet. Look at their on-line catalog for the rebuild kit, and click on the small logo that will lead you to the information sheet with the specs.

Re: Rebuilding XPAG 9204
The cam problem is easy - assuming you have the lifters out! The center bearing is a split bearing, and once tapped forward from the center cam bearing journal can be separated and removed. That allows the cam to be removed; be careful not to knock a lobe against the front cam bearing on removal. To...

I'm pretty sure the spring page comes from Blower's manual, an oft-overlooked resource.
If anyone has a spare TC Brown Book to sell, I am looking for one.

I'm going to re-commission a TC that was last on the road in the 70's, do brake lines on a TD, and install a blower on another TC. Except I can't drive them!

Re: This is what my TC is in it's dreams
So let me think this through: You have an Amilcar car weighing 650 pounds complete with a 900cc engine, remove the drivetrain and install a 12,000cc aircraft engine weighing 800 pounds, producing 140 HP, and dare to drive it? What a snorting beast! I drove an Oldsmobile-Allard once, and it scared th...

Re: To Shave or Not To Shave? (the Cylinder Head)
Like Steve, I suspect you have some impediment in your present engine, and that just putting on a hotter head will not bring it up to your taste. A stock 1250 is a peppy little engine when timing is correct and the distributor has been rebuilt. My guess is that you have something amiss in the valve ...

TD would be more comfortable than a TC, easier to drive, easier to steer, etc. But not nearly as cool!

Re: M6 Fine Bolts?
I hear that you feel reluctant to hang the block from the four 8x1 bolts, but I have done so with literally hundreds of engines, and have never had the slightest problem. It's all a matter of aligning the four brackets so they support the block and distribute the weight as evenly as possible. I have...

Re: Taps and dies
For the engine I find that M6x1, 8x1 and 10x1.5 cover just about everything, and for the rest of the car I use 1/4, 5/16 and 3/8BSF. Not all taps and dies are equal; I buy a good brand from a commercial supply house or MG specialist, and am usually happy. There are different types of taps, though: t...

Re: M6 Fine Bolts?
When cleaning the threads do NOT use a shiny, new, crisp tap, as it will remove enough metal to weaken the threads. Use either a dedicated clean-out tap, or an old tap that has been vigorously sand-blasted. I offer this suggestion because one Australian owner bought and used a new tap on his head st...

Re: M6 Fine Bolts?
I think M8x1.0 bolts are used to support the engine, not 6x1. The length of the bolts will be determined by the length of the bolt tubes on the stand head, but if you can only find longer bolts, you can always use washers to reduce their effective length. It's awkward, but do use all 4 arms for supp...

Re: Second gear from standstill
A TC box is a strong box - that's why TD racers used to retro-fit TC gearboxes - they are such better units than TD gearboxes. TC boxes hardly ever break, or wear out (other than the flimsy rear transmission mounts, which break all the time, and need to be reinforced). To my mind, first gear is desi...
