Re: Lucas fog lamps

Ray, I believe cars from sn. 5000 down had the FT27, your car would be correct with the SF462 as is.

Re: sector shaft bore

Mark,
Good points. Let's factor in the cost of the VW conversion and see how that affects cost of operation compared to tire wear if that is a problem. I have driven a TC equipped with a VW conversion and it was fine, but I do prefer the faster feel of the original box when all is set up properly.

Re: sector shaft bore

Mark, my Morgan is the same way and there is a slight bit of lost motion also in the steering box as all of them have, but it does goe nicely down the road. My TC did not have much more free play than my Morgan and the tie rod ends are in good shape as are the king pins, however it was not pleasant ...

Re: sector shaft bore

These steering boxes or relatives of them were used in many British cars of the period and beyond, TR's, Big Healeys, AC's and Morgans and more. My 1969 Morgan Plus 8 has a Cam Gears box which uses the same bearings as the Bishop's Cam TC box and the internals are very similar. They all have a sligh...

Re: sector shaft bore

Why are needle bearings a bad idea? Just curious....... He could always take it to a machine shop and have them fit a bushing and ream for his existing sector shaft. They always have a bit of on center free play, it is just the design. If the car is wandering all over it isn't necessarily the steeri...

Re: hood to windscreen

There is a socket as I recall that lines the holes. Moss shows it for the TD-TF but I suspect it is for the TC also or check From the Frame up.

Re: gauge of TC panels

UK and US gauge are not the same. I found that most of the body sheet metal was between US gauge 20 and 22. When I built my tub years ago, I used mostly 22 as it was easier to find. I could butt weld it without problem if I had to make patches for rust repair in the wings or running boards. The slig...

Re: Handbrake Cross Shaft on TC

You can purchase a chrome tube that simply slides over the old one and nobody will know the difference. Joe Curto used to offer these and they work just fine.

I assume the running gear, engine, gearbox, etc. is in the chassis as that will make a difference also.

Re: 1948 TC convertible top replacement

First, it is good to do a trial fit up prior to painting the car and then taking it back off, but nobody thinks about that. Assuming you are buying a ready-made kit with instructions. The major issue you are to be concerned about is getting front the side curtains to fit nicely in the top opening so...

Re: 1948 TC convertible top replacement

I bought all this from Moss and believe they were made by Robbins for Moss. There were very specific instructions on installation that were helpful. The top should fit to allow a bit of the side rain flap to fit over the side curtain and the front of the side curtain should be against the windshield...

Re: Low fuel lamp

I cannot remember the font or shade of green it has been a long time since I did this. The font was nothing fancy and I think I just chose a medium green of some sort and it all worked out fine. I might add that eventually I picked up a used lamp at a flea market that I installed and really, they we...

I used a color printer with some transparent film and experimented with various fonts and tints and made up a reasonable facsimile of the face.

Are you doing the side curtains also? Half of the job of top replacement is getting the top and curtains to line up nicely when everything is installed.

Re: TC Steering

My TC was equipped with the typical Excelsiors. I will tell you that once I increased the toe to 1/2" there was no need to fight anything. It tracked straight down the road and following a line into a corner was even improved. I sold this car on BAT last Oct. and there is a driving video of some len...

Re: TC Steering

Give it a try, if you notice no difference you can readjust. Yes, the steering box has a bit of free play at center, they all do, but the problem is with car wanting to follow every groove in the road surface because of the front end geometry. The vehicle should not be wandering this way and that. M...
