Re: Ignition coil heating up

The original coils on TC's were 4.2 Ohms and tended to not run hot at all. Typical coils are 1.5 Ohms, though 3 Ohms are also easy to find. They look the same from the outside. "Modern" coils can be even less resistance, with 0.5 Ohms or 0.2 Ohms. Ray asked if you are using a "modern" coil, meaning ...

Re: Ignition coil heating up

All the circuits are being fed battery voltage. If the battery is reading over 15V sitting in the garage, that is too high. Simple adjustment of the regulator. Lead/acid batteries will not last long if they are being overcharged. Not good for the dynamo, either. Many things to consider when sorting ...

Re: Ignition coil heating up

It can be frustrating trying to determine what voltage to set your voltage regulator at, using the old Lucas instructions. Now I simply occasionally check the battery voltage when I return from a drive. Since the last time I fiddled with the adjuster lock nut and set screw it has been reading a bit ...

Re: Ignition coil heating up

What coil are you having trouble with? Brand and (primary) Ohms?

CSI is hinting at dwell, which is point gap.

So that is a 45 distributor?

Re: Hot regulator

What makes you think it is a non standard regulator? Pics? Initial adjustments on those can be tricky to find the correct settings. Only heat I have heard about is when the cutout points get stuck together and cause the dynamo to get heat damaged while the car is sitting. If the points were conducti...

The usual choice is dry graphite powder. Not graphite spray and not graphited grease. The dry powder is generally available in hardware stores

edit- the powder goes on a dry and clean assembly..

Starting on page 36 of the MFK Wood paper in the Supertuning section he talks about both 1.25 and 1.5 engines. For the XPEG he mentions a few different cams, but it looks like he starts suggesting stiffer springs right at 10:1 C.R.

Re: TC rear axle pinon shaft oil seal

Dave- I do not have the number for you because I am using the original scroll seal cap. Someone will have it. Could it be that your pinion bearings are worn, and the shaft is turning a bit out of round? That would cause the rubber to distort and not seal. These TC pinion bearings have a history of b...

If anyone else is after rear wheel bearings there are currently a pair of original sealed R&M's for sale on ebay.
50 year old rubber seals should work as good as a rope handled shovel.

Re: TC tyres

I still say there is not a chance in hell the 6.1 inch wide tires are going to fit in the rear of a TC, unless non-stock wider rear fenders or cut down diff axles are used. The American Classic Model A tires Rob mentioned at 5.5 inch would be a very tight fit in back. All the pictures of the 155's o...

Re: TC Rear Wheel Bearings

One thing we need to keep in mind about wheel bearing types is that the wheels on a TC (and therefore the wheel bearings) are only ever spinning at a fairly low speed. A TC with 27" outside diameter tires, the wheels are only spinning at 754 RPM at 60mph. A TC with 30" outside dia (model A tires) ar...

Re: TC Rear Wheel Bearings

Roger mentioned the double row bearing some racers have used, as well as the modifications required. I was surprised to recieve the SKF 6208-RSJ bearings from Moss around 10 years ago, as their cost probably exceeded what they were charging for them at the time. Now they appear to be selling 6208 re...

Re: TC Rear Wheel Bearings

All the single row bearings here are deep groove. If something requires extreme sideloading protection then you would go with double row angular contact bearings, like on the pinion shaft. Double row angular contact ball bearings are far superior to stacked deep grove ball bearings for side loading....

Re: TC Rear Wheel Bearings

Go with the much better quality 6208-2RSJ (made in USA). You often get what you pay for in bearings. People on British car and motorcycle forums have been anti- SKF "Explorer" (plain old) wheel bearings for a long time. Interesting to note that SKF also makes some super high quality specialty bearin...
