Re: TC 5 speed box

The pumpkin mod on the Morris unit actually raises the ratio, so you rev LOWER than stock at a given speed, not higher. Or maybe I misunderstood the previous post. Max HP on a stock engine is at 5200 RPM, but max torque is much lower. Of course this data goes out the window if running a non-stock ca...

Re: Just when you think it's safe to go back into the water....

Considering the system has zero pressure, I find it rare that I have to use any kind of sealer on the plugs. If a block has pits then I may use a tiny smear. Two products I've used with good results are Locktite sleeve retainer (usually only on pressurized systems) and a small smear of Permatex Righ...

Re: TC 5 speed box

Using a Morris pumpkin may end up the cheapest but I'm not sure it's the easiest. Machining is required on the pumpkin housing. Likely easier to simply put higher gearing in the existing TC pumpkin. A stock TC can easily run 4.875 and a hopped-up engine can do well with 4.625.

Re: TC 5 speed box

Having driven both, my personal preference is for the TC box. The 5-speed does have its advantages, the biggest obviously being an extra gear on the highway. But it feels completely different and even the synchromesh first gear bothers me a little bit since it takes away from the vintage driving exp...

Re: Supercharged exhaust header mounting hardware

I think the best approach would be to weld risers onto the header plate, and then use thick washers in place of the clamps like MGA, MGB, etc. All you really need to do is make up the difference in thickness. It's hard to tell if there's room to do that though, so a mock-up might be useful. On a sup...

Re: Frame Alignment

You won't get any argument from me that a driver is the most fun way to enjoy a classic car. There's something liberating about having little concern about scratches or other wear and tear type of damage. If my TC was a show car then my wife and I would have missed out on some incredible memories!

Re: TC differential

Hopefully someone has a spare. I know you can buy them from Roger Furneaux and Doug Pelton but they will not be cheap. The Morris conversion does require machining the differential but no modification to the TC axle housing. You have to remove material from the mating face of the differential housin...

Re: TC Bumpers

The eBay TC is a home market car with aftermarket bumpers. EXU models were only produced in 1948-49. While I dislike the look of bumpers on TCs, The EXU bumpers were much nicer looking than any of the aftermarket parts I've seen.

Re: TC Bumpers

Inskip and a couple others sold add-on bumpers which were very popular for a time in the 50s. You still see them now and then. My personal preference is to go without them. If yours are actual EXU bumpers then they will bring a handsome price should you decide to sell.

Re: Frame Alignment

Sorry to hear about the accident. I hope they have good insurance in case this turns into a big repair. Unfortunately I can't help with alignment shops in your part of the world but hopefully someone else can. The problem with a front end collision in a TC is that the wheels stick out farther than a...

Doug P and I believe Roger F also, sell a chrome metal sleeve that slides over the brake handle. Once installed you can't tell it wasn't re-chromed.

If you need to contact someone privately, there are two options. Look on the right under the person's name. You will see "Contact" with a little icon next to it. Click the icon and a small box will pop up. The icon on the left is for a private message. This is exactly like making a post on the forum...

Re: 16 inch front wheels on a TC

Agreed, positive camber is likely the issue. I think if I was going to run wide radials, I would look into de-cambering the axle. You could try a bit more tire pressure to round the tire a bit more. Not that this is normally good practice but it could help the issue without having to bend the axle. ...

Hi Carl, beautiful TA! And the MGA Coupe isn't so bad either, even if it does lack a solid axle. ;) I also like the wood garage floor, and wonder how you keep it free of oil stains.

Not to take anything away from that lovely TC, but is that your D-Type in the background? Very nice!

Re: Compression Ratios, rebores and head skimming

I've been warned against using two standard gaskets, but I don't have any experience actually doing it. A friend has one of those shims, about 1/8" thick. I was under the impression that you used a head gasket on either side. It was made by a local machinist. It should be an easy part to make, but w...

Re: Compression Ratios, rebores and head skimming

I've heard mixed reviews on solid copper gaskets. Some say the racers run them without issues but others say they fail all the time. And a couple people have said you have to continuously re-torque them. Maybe this is why the racers don't have issues, since they probably change gaskets and re-torque...

Re: Compression Ratios, rebores and head skimming

Using the tables in Wood's manual, boring from +60 to +100 increases compression ration by 2.7%, from 7.54 to 7.74. So with a starting compression ratio of 9.3, with a +100 bore you would end up with 9.55:1. That's assuming my math is correct. The only thing I would watch out for is valve to block c...
