Re: Tool recognition

They look like coil spring compressors, but what size are they? To me these tools all look tiny. Like 6" or so. If so, then they can't be for suspension. Maybe post a measurement or a photo of something for size comparison?

Re: Tool recognition

The brass item on the right looks like a lubrication tool, probably grease, or perhaps a metering valve of some sort. If the cap on the side ha a hole then I'd guess valve. If it's solid, I'd guess grease. The center tools are definitely a compressor of some sort but pretty small. I can't think of w...

Re: Front Hub Bearings, Again!

I have no explanation for why they measure so small. What brand are the bearings? I have some vintage Timken here as well as a new set of API and they both measure the same. I use a small piece of pipe, (de-burred inside) to tap them on. Once they are on, you may not get them off in one piece as pic...

Re: Front Hub Bearings, Again!

Could you have been off by a 10th? A used original stub axle I just measured is 0.984". A brand new stub axle from Bob G measures 0.985". The bearings are 25mm which translates to 0.9842" although I measure closer to 0.9835" on the tapers I have sitting here and I think this is right because it won'...

Re: Loss of water?

Interesting, I don't recall having any trouble getting a socket on the nuts. I use a normal short socket with a 3" extension. The extension is narrow enough to clear any obstacles and the socket is short enough to sit below them.

CONGRATS!!! She's a beauty. I don't know whether or not it's a record, but you have a friend of mine beat. He bought his TC in 1960 and daily drove it until 1969 when he started the restoration. He just finished last year. See his story here: http://www.tcmotoringguild.org/members/lemieux/ My latest...

Re: Gearbox woes..

I've heard both arguments, both for and against sealer. On one hand you want water to drain, and on the other hand you don't want the parts to wear on each other. I installed mine with no sealer since any movement should be quite minimal. I also painted the wood with POR15, which is hard as nails. I...

Re: Front Hub Bearings, Again!

The bearings should be tight in the hub, requiring tools to press in place. You really don't want them moving around as you drive, or they will continue to get looser until the hub is ruined, just as Duncan already described above. They should also be tight on the spindle but I feel they don't need ...

Re: Front Hub Bearings, Again!

The hub will come off without damaging the bearings. The small outer bearing comes off with the hub and the large inner bearing stays on the spindle. But if you need to remove the rear bearing, and it's tight, then the bearing will likely not survive. The difference is that the outer bearing will be...

Hi John, below the reply box, click on "full editor". You can attach photos there. Just drag and drop them right into your post. Or you can also use the "attachments" tab and do it the old fashioned way. Like most sites there is a size limit of course, so if you get an error then you will need to sh...

Re: Rebore sizes

A friend of mine (Olson here on the forum) has a 1350. I don't know what else is in there but it runs like a scalded cat! He installed a 4.3 rear end and the car handles it well. When on tour, he can leave me in the dust on the highway. On a steep climb, he uses 3rd gear and we take turns passing ea...

Re: Front Hub Bearings, Again!

Be careful, once you install the tapered bearings, sometimes they go on so tight that you can't take them off again without damage. If they don't go on by hand then it's best to set them up on a dummy spindle, and then pack the bearings and transfer everything to the car.

Re: Tompkins steering box upgrade

Sounds like a previous owner bodge to me. All I can say is to be careful, as steering failures are not unheard of.

FTFU also has this info on additional things to check for safety:

PS... there are no stupid questions.

Re: Gearbox woes..

I'm no gearbox expert but it's probably worn forks or clearances. I don't think you will fix this without taking things apart, which means gearbox out. I know of a couple TCs out there with bungee cords around the shifter to help keep them in gear. Probably not the best solution. In fact it will pro...

Re: Front Hub Bearings, Again!

It sounds like the spacer between the bearings is off. Measure the length of the spacer and then measure the raised area inside the hub between the two bearings. The measurements should be the same. If not and the spacer is too short, you can use shims to get things lined up. If the spacer is too lo...

Re: TC Shock Spacer?

Here is the breakdown so far. It seems that with the exception cars where the shocks are known to be rebuilt, all cars without spacers are early and all cars with spacers are late. Here are the results combined from the forum and the email list: With Spacers: Craig Siler: TC7715 EXU Duncan MacKellar...

Yikes! I'm sorry to hear about that. I would suspect a rod bearing as well. Did a radiator hose let go? Keep us posted on what you find.

Re: TC Shock Spacer?

No consensus as yet. I asked on the email list and no one had any definitive info. It seems like the confirmed sightings of spacers all came from late model cars, so perhaps they were an addition at some point. One thing is for certain, if the TABC community can't answer a question then it can't be ...
