Re: Tompkins steering box upgrade

Sounds like a previous owner bodge to me. All I can say is to be careful, as steering failures are not unheard of.

FTFU also has this info on additional things to check for safety:

PS... there are no stupid questions.

Re: Gearbox woes..

I'm no gearbox expert but it's probably worn forks or clearances. I don't think you will fix this without taking things apart, which means gearbox out. I know of a couple TCs out there with bungee cords around the shifter to help keep them in gear. Probably not the best solution. In fact it will pro...

Re: Front Hub Bearings, Again!

It sounds like the spacer between the bearings is off. Measure the length of the spacer and then measure the raised area inside the hub between the two bearings. The measurements should be the same. If not and the spacer is too short, you can use shims to get things lined up. If the spacer is too lo...

Re: TC Shock Spacer?

Here is the breakdown so far. It seems that with the exception cars where the shocks are known to be rebuilt, all cars without spacers are early and all cars with spacers are late. Here are the results combined from the forum and the email list: With Spacers: Craig Siler: TC7715 EXU Duncan MacKellar...

Re: Loss of water?

Yikes! I'm sorry to hear about that. I would suspect a rod bearing as well. Did a radiator hose let go? Keep us posted on what you find.

Re: TC Shock Spacer?

No consensus as yet. I asked on the email list and no one had any definitive info. It seems like the confirmed sightings of spacers all came from late model cars, so perhaps they were an addition at some point. One thing is for certain, if the TABC community can't answer a question then it can't be ...

I've received two orders from him recently but getting a hold of him has been really difficult. I've been waiting two weeks to get an invoice for the last order so I can pay.

I don't know if he carries such things, but Roger Furneaux has a lot of original type parts and is in Devon. FTFU has them all but would have to ship to you from USA.

Re: TC Shock Spacer?

Mine all look about like Duncan's. I didn't actually measure, but the arms look approximately the same distance on all 10 shocks I examined. There may be slight variation but I would have to measure to be sure. Also, I need to correct my earlier post. I looked again and the set with unknown history ...

Re: TC Shock Spacer?

I just looked at mine, and one set that I know has been rebuilt has no spacers. Another set that I don't know the history of, does have spacers. And looking at the front shocks on my own TC, one has a spacer and the other doesn't. Or is it possible that it isn't a spacer at all but part of a replace...

Re: My car is too quiet!

Stainless costs more, so exhaust systems made of it are often thin-walled. This does make them a little louder, but more importantly it seems (to my ears) that they let more high frequency sound out. Low tones are far less annoying to the ear, so to me a loud system with low tones is more pleasing t...

Re: Oil filter and supply lines color

I have several awards for car shows that I've participated in the past. They are all in a plastic box in my attic. I've only entered those things in the past in order to support the organizers. I have no interest in showing off or collecting trophies. I have no problem with those who do, but it just...

Re: Unleaded Conversion??

Personally I would at least do the exhaust valves, but there are those who say it isn't necessary. The expense isn't that high compared to having to pull the head and do it later. Just my opinion though.

Re: Rebuilding XPAG 9204

The rear cam bearings seem to last forever, but the fronts wear much faster and I always replace them no matter how good they look. There is a factory bearing reamer (I have one but I'm a bit far from you) but I'm sure a machine shop can rig something up to do the job. The groove in the bearing is s...

Re: My car is too quiet!

I'm sure there are lots of options, but when my original rusted away, I installed a 1.75" aluminized pipe from the header back, with a 24" x 2" glass pack in the stock muffler location. It has a very sporty sound without being obnoxious. After more than 10 years now it's getting louder so maybe time...

Re: Oil filter and supply lines color

I'm no expert on TD, but I do think that they did things a little different, to speed up the line. Meaning not quite as careful with paint and such things. I've pulled a few original MGBs apart and there is paint overspray on everything. Coming off the line, as far as details go, the farther back in...

Re: Rebuilding XPAG 9204

My take... 1) I don't think there is any real world difference between steel or brass, although in the long term steel will eventually rust. No sealer should be necessary. This is a non-sealed system and therefore zero pressure. The only way you should get a leak is if the block has a lot of corrosi...

Fun stuff! I re-used big end bolts once. Upon tightening, one snapped right off. I definitely recommend replacing both big and small and bolts.

Re: MG TC: Wiring cover (scuttle masking board) dimensions

I've never had one and never plan to. Personally I don't see any significant advantage to having it in place. I do remember though, when a TF with the board in place had smoke coming from behind the dash. There was no way to get to it so the owner had to scramble to get to the battery cutoff in the ...
