Re: Camshaft Life

It could be that the vendor did not send you what you ordered. According to WKF Wood (p8 of 54) http://www.ttalk.info/WKF-Wood-XPAG-Engine-Book.pdf The lifter bore should be .906 inch (23mm) and the tappet clearance should be .0015 inch. In other words, the tappet dia. should be .9045 inch. I found ...

Re: BMC Replacement engine

Ray, does the term "vintage" and the 1931 date determine some sort of tax or safety certificate exemption in UK? If so, there is nothing comparable in the US. AFAIK, in most or all US States, if you have a car that was originally sold with (for example) no turn signals or running lights, carbide hea...

Re: TC wing piping question.

No wonder so many TC owners say they cannot fit Model A sized 475/500-19 tires. On original bodywork cars the fit in the rear is tight, but it can be done--and they can be installed and removed pretty easily. With all these repop skinney rear fenders there simply is no room. Running the larger diame...

Re: Voltage Control Box on a 1936 TA

The voltage regulator does know know the difference. You "flash" the dynamo. You do not use a battery cable to flash the dynamo, just a little wire. The wire may come from the voltage regulator. FromTheFrameUp has a instruction sheet on their website. Here it is-- https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0...

Re: Lucas Directional Switch (turn signal)

Only the EXU cars had turn signals and a turn signal switch. TC7556 is not an EXU car, so you could have any number of possible arrangements to your turn signals. Always best when toubleshooting turn signals to check the bulbs on the bad side-- and whatever grounds and power supply they may have.

Re: TC wing piping question.

The front wing and running board are perfectly aligned and contoured together, but they are joined together and continuous. The rear of the running board on a TC does not join with the rear wing, so there is no reason for the outer edges to be in any sort of alignment. But, many rear wings you see o...

Re: TC wing piping question.

Wow. Running the piping across the gap? Seriously? That makes no sense and looks foolish.

Here is how the factory did it in October 1949-

Re: BMC Replacement engine

Of the 3 plugs on the differential (drain, fill level, and filler plug on top) you want to be sure the vent in the filler plug is clear/open. If you can get a whole quart in there without overflowing at the fill level (open) plug, I will be surprised. Let us know.

Re: BMC Replacement engine

The gearbox and differential will each take almost a regular US quart. You should have a little left over. I tried standard 140W (GL4) in the gearbox and found that when filled to the proper level it foamed like crazy. Now I use the Redline NS in the same multi-weight (75W-140 NS) as Steve suggested...

Re: Poor (at best) braking on my TC - advice requested

My braking was poor until I finally got the system bled properly. And I am using DOT 3/4 which is typically considered pretty easy to bleed. A suction bleeder applied to the front nipples finally resolved the issue.

Originally? My guess would be something along the lines of what (in the USA) we would call a furniture tack. They come in all sorts of sizes.

The distributor advance needs to be changed for supercharging. General rule is for full advance much sooner than normally aspirated.

Re: Ignition coil heating up

The ONLY adjustment you should try to lower battery voltage from being over 15V is discussed in the center document, figure 11.11 under 3. The screw B should only be turned a very small amount. If the screwdriver slot can be viewed as the hour hand of a clock, you would only want to try about a half...

Re: Ignition coil heating up

The original coils on TC's were 4.2 Ohms and tended to not run hot at all. Typical coils are 1.5 Ohms, though 3 Ohms are also easy to find. They look the same from the outside. "Modern" coils can be even less resistance, with 0.5 Ohms or 0.2 Ohms. Ray asked if you are using a "modern" coil, meaning ...

Re: Ignition coil heating up

All the circuits are being fed battery voltage. If the battery is reading over 15V sitting in the garage, that is too high. Simple adjustment of the regulator. Lead/acid batteries will not last long if they are being overcharged. Not good for the dynamo, either. Many things to consider when sorting ...

Re: Ignition coil heating up

It can be frustrating trying to determine what voltage to set your voltage regulator at, using the old Lucas instructions. Now I simply occasionally check the battery voltage when I return from a drive. Since the last time I fiddled with the adjuster lock nut and set screw it has been reading a bit ...

Re: Ignition coil heating up

What coil are you having trouble with? Brand and (primary) Ohms?

CSI is hinting at dwell, which is point gap.

So that is a 45 distributor?

Re: Hot regulator

What makes you think it is a non standard regulator? Pics? Initial adjustments on those can be tricky to find the correct settings. Only heat I have heard about is when the cutout points get stuck together and cause the dynamo to get heat damaged while the car is sitting. If the points were conducti...

The usual choice is dry graphite powder. Not graphite spray and not graphited grease. The dry powder is generally available in hardware stores

edit- the powder goes on a dry and clean assembly..

Re: Valve Springs

Starting on page 36 of the MFK Wood paper in the Supertuning section he talks about both 1.25 and 1.5 engines. For the XPEG he mentions a few different cams, but it looks like he starts suggesting stiffer springs right at 10:1 C.R.
