Re: TC Fuel Tank
It turns out the "builder" used studs instead of a bolts to attach the the tank to the fenders. I resorted to the double-nut technique to extract. Now it's off to the repair shop.

TC Fuel Tank
I’m missing something trying to remove the gas tank. I can move it, but it looks like it is secured into the fenders were the two rubber bushings are on the side of the tank. I hate trying to force something. I removed the straps and the spare tire carrier along with the fuel line. I’m missing somet...

Re: Cooling System & Head Gasket
Brad - don't be surprised if the new valve cover leaks; the cork kind tend to. But also, don't be surprised if the head studs you tightened down are bad. Often, when old head studs need tightening, they are actually stretching, resulting in very uneven torque. So blown head gaskets can and do happe...

Use antiseize with original type hardware. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Permatex-1-2-Pint-Anti-Seize-Lubricant/20056284 If I am not mistaken the water pump fasteners use split lock washers. Despite the persistent myth of split lock washers being useless, they actually work exceptionally well if they ...

Re: Cooling System & Head Gasket
I bit the bullet and ordered a new grill from FTFU this morning. Although I’m a little bit under the weather I had full intention of getting the damn starter in today; however the clutch return bracket I got from Moss needed its mounting hole enlarged in order to get the starter mounting bolt throug...

Re: Cooling System & Head Gasket
Brad- If you are having overheating issues, keep in mind the XPAG has an entirely mechanical (springs only) distributor timing advance mechanism. If allowed to age with the car, these springs tend to get stiff from age, which results in retarded (not advancing enough) timing. The mechanism needs oi...

Re: Cooling System & Head Gasket
I will certainly check that out Tom. Thanks.Tom Lange, MGT Repair wrote:In fact, I recommend a rebuild of almost every distributor by Jeff Schlemmer of Advanced Distributor, who re-sets the advance curves appropriately, which cures many overheating issues.

Re: Cooling System & Head Gasket
Thank you everyone for all the great advice. Because of the level of deterioration of the thermostat housing and the branch pipe I elected to replace all the bits, including the water pump. Unfortunately, I haven’t quite figured out how to post pictures here, but if you saw the condition of these pi...

Cooling System & Head Gasket
After several months of procrastination and lack of time I finally got to work on the TC in an effort to replace the suspected bad starter. The starter replacement came about because it failed during multiple attempts to do some compression checks. The compression checks were driven by the car devel...

Re: TC Firewall/Bulkhead Colour
Brad, I can tell you that TC2911 has the deeper cruder looking flutes and the bolts holding the firewall to the scuttle were and are black. The firewall as I mentioned had not been removed from the tub and all the bolts washers, wire loom holder, etc were intact when I took it apart. As far a the e...

Re: Does anybody know TC0777?
The photos are small, but common oil leaks are valve cover and side cover gaskets. It could also be the fittings on the pipe from block to head, or the fittings on the line from oil pump to filter. Worse would be a fractured pipe, and although unlikely it has been known to happen. Also check the oi...

Re: Does anybody know TC0777?
Eighty-four mile round trip with a stop for lunch at Shirley Plantation in Charles City County, VA with the HWMGTS the day before yesterday. Just a few miles from home I began to smell burning oil. When I arrived home I saw what is in the two pictures below. Head gasket or valve cover gasket? Need t...

Re: TC Firewall/Bulkhead Colour
Sherrell states on page 61 that the bulkhead or scuttle (firewall) pressing changed between #4884 & #5562. It would be interesting to know if yours has the deep flutes or the shallow ones. Apparently, the deeper flutes indicate a body from Carbodies of Coventry and the shallow flutes indicate a body...

Re: Does anybody know TC0777?
It is well documented that TC's south of sn# 5000 had light gray firewalls and an engine of similar color. Your car is early and would have been done in that fashion. Tints may very a bit depending upon age, exposure to heat , oil fumes, and what was in the mix. My firewall was never removed from t...
