Re: sector shaft bore
Stephen, my '70 Morgan 4/4 has a similar steering box. I can drive it at 70 and the car tracks straight. Therein lies my theory that TC 7801 should track properly when all is said and done. I help my BIL with old Jeeps and Willys in the U.P. of Michigan where we spend the summers. If I recall, the s...

Re: sector shaft bore
Well, I think I have the issue I was facing all figured out. After much checking and measuring and disassembly and reassembly I have come up with enough good parts to make a very satisfactory steering box. The good sector shaft has virtually no wear on it because it has been chromed or hardened and ...

sector shaft bore
I have TC 7801 which has taken me entirely too long to finish but I'm getting there. I am working on the steering box. Over the years I have gathered three steering column/steering boxes. I've taken them all apart recently and found that they are all different regarding the sector shaft. In one unit...

Re: Rear engine oil seal leak
I'm going to study how to keep the gasket from sealing the breather pipe. Lots of options. The new hole in the gasket didn't seems to allow any oil to escape through the tube but I really don't want a direct path to the outside. I'll figure something out. I'm "breathing" a sigh of relief knowing tha...

Re: Rear engine oil seal leak
Well, things are interesting. I kept wondering how could so much oil could be coming from the rear seal during short run times while tuning things up. The builder couldn't have screwed up the seal if everything else was good such as compression at 150 psi etc. There had to be more to the problem and...

Re: Rear engine oil seal leak
Thanks for the info. I guess I'll just have to pull the engine and take a peek at what has been done. That will dictate what to do next. Hopefully I can get at it in the next couple of weeks. We leave for several months during the summer. It might not get attention until this fall. I really don't wa...

Re: Rear engine oil seal leak
Stephen, I'm inclined to go the slinger route but it still sounds like the engine needs to be disassembled. Is that correct?

Rear engine oil seal leak
Making a bit of progress on TC7801. Got it running finally and tuned up. All is well and it runs very well except for one big item. The engine had been rebuilt 20 years ago and was a stalled project when I bought it. It had reportedly been rebuilt and test run which I believe to be true based on new...

Re: Brush installation in a TC starter
Steve, I used to own an industrial motor repair plant. We rebuilt electric motors, generators, turbines, pumps etc. up to about 10,000 Hp. Occasionally someone would come in with a motor/need like yours. There was no way we could economically help that person out. Our best recommendation was to find...

Re: Brush installation in a TC starter
Thanks for the photo. It verified the fact that I had in fact removed and installed the brushes correctly. It's pretty hard to not get the brushes in the proper boxes due to the pigtail length. It turns out, with the starter on the bench and not having good connections, that the arcing was simply du...

Brush installation in a TC starter
Well, in my infinite wisdom I decided to clean the starter on my '49 TC while doing a total rebuild of the car. No problem with the disassembly or cleaning of all the parts. The brushes were good as well as the bearings so I put it all back together. I applied power to the unit and all I got were sp...

Re: Inside fit rear arch wood to wheel well
My TC tub was built by Fenton Bagley. It is a copy of what came out of the 'Works' and is very accurate. Fenton did really good work and was basically an artist with wood and metal. TC7801 is a stalled project(20 years) that I picked up a couple of years ago to restore. I'm in the primer stage now a...

Re: Inside fit rear arch wood to wheel well
I don't know why the taper is there but there is a pad under the wheel well cover. It is thicker than the taper to steel gap. I generally just apply some seam sealer between the steel and the wood to seal it up. Works fine to fill the gap.

Re: Charging rate?
I don't have first hand knowledge of the TC charging system but I assume it is similar to my TD's. First check the generator to determine if it is generating the proper voltage. At about 1500 rpm it should be a little above 14 volts at which point the red ignition light should go dark. It really won...

Re: Body paint stripping
Stripping using liquids took a turn for the worse last year in the US when they outlawed the MEK additive in most strippers. The new stuff just doesn't work well. Maybe you can still find some where you live. Good luck and if you can find it get lots. I have a small media blaster about 2x2x3 feet us...

Re: Door hinge request
How do I send a personal message to anyone? I just don't know if it is proper to send personal information to a person on this forum. Do I just post my email address. Perhaps I should update my information if I can figure out how to do that. I'm a real technical cripple with computers. Much better w...

Re: Door hinge request
John, I'd sure be willing to try it if it isn't too much trouble to get it to me.. I know mine is not original to my TC or perhaps any TC and it doesn't fit well so yours might be far better. I'll try to figure out how to send you a PM. Haven't done that before. Mark

Door hinge request
I have TC7801. I'm now fitting the doors for the second time and fine tuning them after the first pass on straightening and filling etc., on the tub. I noticed that the hinge on the lower left door is different than the other side. It has a hex type half "ball" instead of the round ball used for piv...

Re: Oil filter and supply lines color
The enjoyment of building a car as it supposedly came form the factory is great satisfaction for me. The research is fun. It's all about the journey. The routine things like dealing in old grease, body work and painting, etc., that take a ton of time are not fun but a necessary part of the overall f...

Re: TC Shock Spacer?
I don't have a spacer to give to you but all four of my shocks have the spacers and I think they are original to the car. Photos of two other cars that belong to friends show the spacers.
