Duncan - Yes - you are right. I was reporting the two possibilities based solely on the engine number. According to Roger Wilson's article cited above, the early TC block was casting 24124 until 1947, and from then on the TC, Y and TD ALL used the 24146 block until July 1950. Then the TD used block 24445 until mid-1952, when block 168422 was introduced. It does not appear that there was a casting number change when the engine ID tag was moved to a newly-revised plinth from the earlier bell-housing location, although Roger does suggest that the drain-tap moved from under the exhaust to just behind the engine front plate in 1947, when the 24146 block was introduced. According to that the first 2,700 TDs all used the same 24146 block as the TC, 24146, but I though almost all TCs had the central drain tap. I must be wrong, and am struck by the differences between what Roger writes and what Neil Cairns (whom most people quote) writes.

I've never seen a TC engine with a forward-mounted drain tap. Does that really exist?

The "forward" drain tap on a 24146 block indicates a Y type engine in the Roger Wilson article. That is how I read it.

Roger says, " Later, when the Y type was introduced in 1947, the block casting number became 24146 without any obvious design changes, although the drain valve was moved forward from behind the exhaust manifold. The TC engine changed to using the 24146 block at the same time, and the TD engine used the 24146 block from its introduction in 1949"

Doesn't it seem unlikely that they would change the casting of the Y-type drain valve in 1947, but not the indentical TC block, at the same time?

Is not the real question if or if not the Y Type engines are casting #24146, and if the tap is "forward" from the TC location-- which is in about the middle. Both Steves late TC block and my late TC block have the tap in the normal central TC location, and are 24146 blocks. Where is the tap in the 24146 (early) TD blocks?

Neil says the Early T Series and YA block has a central tap (p49), and the YB has a forward tap (p52) but he is not sure the casting number. Seems like both articles are vague and worded poorly or ambiguous on this same tap topic.

Tom, thank you for the chassis number, I have one more XPAG block and will let you know the number tomorrow if you can kindly let me know the chassis number for that one also. Someone down the track may want to know. All blocks have the water tap in the centre.

Seems to me that there are such inconsistencies in what has been written about which castings were used in what cars when, that a bit of research and polling would be a good idea. I know that I am confused!

Don - happy to help with engine/chassis numbers.
