Rebuilding an SU carburettor

I was wondering if anyone in the UK has used a company for re-building SU carburettors (off my TC). There are a few companies advertising this rebuild service in the UK but would prefer to go with someone by recommendation. Any pointers would be most welcome.

Regards

Steve

I highly recommend Buren, the SU people, near Salisbury. They’ve done two TC sets and a VA set for me, and I was most pleased with their work.

Thanks for your response Tom, Burlen is one of the companies I`ve looked at & used for obtaining SU parts in the past, have spoken to them this morning & their current turnaround time is 10 x weeks, quotation for reconditioning the Twin H2`s is £600.00 + vat. Another company recommended is GW Carbs in Essex who again specialise in the SU range (Website is SU carbs.co.uk) . Have spoken to Glen Watson the proprietor this morning & he can currently turn them around in about 4 x weeks & has quoted £380 with no vat. My H2`s are not in a bad state visually but have a recurring technical problem with flooding & fouling the plugs on 1 & 2 cylinders, have tried & tested everything else to no avail so the last resort is to go for reconditioning. Once I get them back from GW Carbs I`ll post an update. Regards Steve

If flooding is an issue, have you tried changing the float valves and resetting the float height? Also check for fuel inside your floats.

Steve is spot on about importance of fuel height. See article on page 29 in this link:

A much different and simpler approach to setting up SU H carbs.

Air leaks through the (worn) throttle shaft cause all sorts of problems in SU carbs. The original H2 carbs are unusual in that the shaft "bushings" do not wear much at all, but the actual brass shaft does. Often all that is needed is to simply replace the shaft to seal up the leaks. Re-bushing is not usually necessary.

Check the carb body throat at the butterfly end to ensure it's still round. They have a habit of distorting (through heat) and become oval.

Thanks to everyone for your inputs & advice on the settings on the H2 carbs. As described in my earlier post I have gone through the full gambit of tests & adjustments on the problem carb, some adjustments improved the symptoms but none proved a long term cure - hence resorting to a full reconditioning of both carbs which hopefully will deliver a solution - they should also look pretty good !!

Whilst on the subject of TC`s & fuel I am about to post a new query on the subject of the MGTC fuel tank - the one currently fitted to my TC has some strange characteristics which makes me doubt it`s origins ??
