MG TA Torque settings for replacing the head

Correct me if I am wrong but should the setting for the head studs be 35 and the rocker shaft 15?

I believe TA is lower than XPAG/XPEG. I seem to recall the torque is around 35-40 but perhaps someone will confirm.

I have had a TA and removed and replaced the head several times using reference to Philip H Smiths tome, Tuning and Maintenance of M.G.s published 1952. His recommendation verbatim "Use the standard ring spanner having a length of about six inches, and apply plenty of force" Perhaps not very useful, but suggests that heads were routinely removed and replaced back in the day by folk who never considered a torque specification.

In the early days when I didn’t know any better I probably exceeded 45/48 lb. on the head but now consider myself lucky I didn’t damage the block.

After I rebuilt the engine some 12 years ago I torqued the head to 35 lb (new head gasket). Since that time the head has been off a couple of times and was last torqued to maybe 38 lb. or slightly over using the same head gasket. No leaks or problems and the gasket looked good. Eight thousand miles later it’s still going well. It is a low compression engine after all.

I didn’t make a record of what I torqued the rocker shaft but imagine 15 lb. should be a safe number.
