Body tub bracket TC

Post by ian theobald » Mon Jan 29, 2018 4:26 pm

Hi there.wondering if any one can supply dimensions etc for the body tub bracket that fits to the TC.
Mine is missing so will probably have to get someone to make.
Will need to know what thickness and width of steel.
Some good pictures of where mounting points on side would be handy as my timber has been replaced and no sign of any where it may of been fitted.
My TC is very late 49 model so maybe did not have one.
Side of car is very solid but drivers door needs pulling in at the top to fit better against front scuttle buff rubbers.
I am now in the process of repairing the passenger door timbers now.thanks Ian

Doug Pelton stocks the bullhorn (metal brace) across the body tub (BP166), and TCs Forever (Mike Sherrell) has photos on pages 176-177. The distance between the top of the door pillars is 45½ ins. All TCs had the same brace.

Thanks for reply.I have sent him a message on his order site but seem to be having trouble with his web site and catalogue site when looking up on google.
MOSS site says unavailable.
I would think easy to make if know how thick steel is and is it hollow or solid .
Some good pictures of actual mounting is what i need.
One day will get that book of Mike Sherrells but does not seem to be available over here in Australia and overseas postage us ridiculously expensive now

Thanks Ian

The bullhorn is solid metal with a circular section with approx dimensions (from my TC).
This photo is the best I’ve got showing how bullhorn fits in the tub.
Sherrell’s book is a ‘must have’ for work on TCs. I’m surprised it’s unavailable in Oz, as Mike is based in Perth. I suggest you drop him an email (http://www.mgtcownersclub.com/).

This is where I am up to at the moment.
It seems the timbers have all been replaced .Everything is rock solid but the Body tub brace was obviously fitted for a reason.
I note that there is a riveted bracket on the wheel arch both sides that has been cut away.
I have removed timber from passenger door now and can see that someone has made repairs by brazing to bottom of the door.
Hopefully I can use meaurements from the drivers side to get door gap correct.
The dash board is a good half inch wider on the pasenger side to match top of door and as much filler was added to capping to suit.
Because the door was hung incorrect someone has cut metal from the rear of the door where it should overhang the body tub so hope to correct that.
When all this is done I might be able to fit new trim that has been in storage for some years.
Will be interesting to see what postage will be from USA and still may decide to try and make the tub bracket
Given that the tub bracket is curved on top I suppose the ends where fit to body must be cut off and flat plate welded to fit under trim otherwise would bulge out.
Am I correct. Thanks Ima

Ian, the brackets rivetted to the wheel arch are the suppurt bracket for the seat back. I had to replace my inner wheel arches as there was nothing but holes srrounded by rust left. I cut the rivets off and made some setscrews that are very shallow. Looks OK.

Hi Norm.Just a little confused now.
Is there anothe bracket that is missing?
I have the bracket on top of wheel arches for seat but down down at area near top hinge is remnants of some plate with about 6 rivets on each side of car.
As for Body tub brace wonder if really required as have driven car for past 8 yrs none the wiser and sides of body quite stiff.
Will check out NTG but little Aussie Peso not to strong against British pound where as bit better with US Dollar.
Reckon all works out in the wash.

Ian, I don't remember the bracket near the top hing shown in your picture.

I would fit the cross brace. It was fitted for a reason and you may find the car is a lot stiffer when driving with it than without it.

It looks easy enough to make, it doesn't have to be an exact replica. Give Mike a shout and get a copy of his books, you'll not regret it.

Hi Ian. There should be a bracket, it has 3 rivets on to the inner wheel arch and 5 screws on to the wood section where it surrounds the hole that gives access to the top hinge bolts.

timandgerda's photo also shows the way the bull horn curves around the inner guard and, with a 90 degree bend, attaches to the side piece.
