TC parking brake handle - removing stuck release rod

Restoring a '48, TC6287. Disassembled in 1977, I bought as a basket case last year missing its body. Steve Baker is finishing up a Special body for me with all the trimmings.

I'm breaking the chassis down for paint and have found that the rod through the parking brake handle is seized. Aside from that (assuming I get it freed up) I don't know how to get it out of the handle itself as there is a pin at the bottom. Is this pin pressed in, screwed in?

Thanks.

Thanks Duncan. I forgot about AS.

It's been soaking with PB Blaster for 4 months. A little gentle twisting at the top threads has done nothing. I'm pretty sure it'll either snap or the threads will be useless.

I've been down holes like this before, I'm thinking I'll be cutting the whole shebang close to the base and rebuilding from there. Nobody will know. Fingers crossed it'll come free.

Too bad, the rest of the chassis is in pretty good condition.

Here are 2 photos to show the top and bottom ends of a new handbrake rod (original looks the same.
The rod is threaded on both ends. The bottom end of the rod is split - originally this was splayed out a bit to provide some resistance to unscrewing. this screws into the pin at the bottom.
Top end has an adapter screwed onto it that the chrome button screws onto.

Hope this helps.

Great pics, Tom. Splayed out, like the screws that secure the butterfly to the throttle shaft in carb. Interesting how no catalog lists the "adapter" shown above which the "button" is screwed onto. In the above link to the Anglo parts catalog:
https://www.angloparts.com/en/catalogue ... stallation
it lists a NA chrome kit to dress up the handbrake. The kit appears to include a new button and the "adapter" piece.
So someone has made that adapter reproduction part before.

Looks like Mitch can try disassembling some more, to get at that splayed end. Grind some weld and "remove" taper pins. Some long needle nosed pliers to compress the splay, once the handle unit is separated from the cross-shaft? Might be worth a try.

Bob Grunau makes the chrome kit, to save the trouble of cutting the shaft to remove the handle for re-chroming. I don't think the factory had restoration in mind when they designed that part of the car!
