New TA Owner, Problem 4. Gear

Post by Franz Tenbrock » Sun Jul 15, 2018 4:13 am

Hallo, since 1 week i have a TA from 1937, the engine was replaced some time,
Today, the weather is realy fine i go for the first ride on the road.
In the city he runs perfect , i think so , the steering is a little bit restless when i am going straigt, i took me 5 Minutes to learn, we go out the city in the 4. Gear, after 2 km the car will not take the gas, i go to the clutch the car rolling on, after about 10 sekonds rolling i can go on normally for the next miles.
I think it is the carburettor.

But the feeling on the road was great.

In 2 Weeks i want to go on oldtimer rally, about 100 km , so i have a little work ?!

The petrol about 10 liters was old, becaus the previous owner has no time to ride the car, we put 15 litre 95 oktan petrol to it.

what about additive ?

you have an irea

Hallo
the car was the most time in the garage i think, the fuel pump doesn t work so the owner before changed it to another model, in the city it is ok but when the car needs petrol for faster speed it does not go.
Today i took the old damaged su4080 fuel pump and take a part. I see there was a lot dirt in it.
So i think this dirt will be in the carburettor too.

So i am looking for a good Video where i can see what to do.
what do you think about this video, will it work ?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UnH4rJncLE

In the meantime i orderd a su pump in England.

The old one i will prepare with the EPK700 service kit, the motor of the pump is still going.

What do you think about it ?

a new MG TA owner ;-)
Best Regards
Franz

Car appear very nice to me- I have same problem on my TC - seven years stopped in garage-
reconditioned the fuel tank full of dirty applied a faucet screen filter(Norton) inside the tank-changed all the copper pipes - applied a Malpassi King Filter before the pumps - (i have one FACET (hided)and one SU new, that working in series with a switch for chose the working pump)- have rebuild the carbs - now all the problems are solved -and car is very reliable
https://photos.app.goo.gl/En2jpbRgEKCRmX5N6

I hope that you are more lucky of me, I was helped 4 time on the road -towed to home by my wife with our 4Runner (every time for dirty fuel)- I suggest a full tank of 100 octane, good fuel-and a good fuel filter
Someone prefer the filter after the pump and before the carbs
I have preferred this other solution due the contamination of rust and dirty in the tank- the Malpassi have a glass
and I can control the fuel condition- are also a fuel pressure adjustable regulator

I think that that Fuel filter aren't professional - but it can solve temporary the problem, it must be changed frequently- I have see one similar. BUT with a larger Fuel Filter -probably you can find one at the shop nearest your home

I agree with you filter before the pump save the cleaning of the pump and carbs BUT NOTE
that clogging filter can stop the fuel -and SU pump are very sensitive to working dray -it can have serious problem-filter must be frequently Controled
FACET normally have before a mesh filter that can stop the large debris only

Hi Franz
Amazon filter are similar to MALPASSI Filter King-But Malpassi are the better that you can find on the market
costs are doubled but you can have the better at less see on ebay UK
I have it on my TC and my TD and also on my Austin Healey

Was the engine replaced with another MPJG engine, or an XPAG engine? I don't know what weight to use with a TA engine (I assume the same), but for an XPAG engine straight 50w oil is not good - you want a good 20w50 oil, ideally one with extra zddp.

TAs are wonderful cars, and yours looks very nice. I have a '36 TA.

If you're going to run a single grade oil, run 30W as called for in the manual. 20W-50 is definitely better.

Hallo Steve,
i have read a lot before i orderd the 50, at the time it is hot here, about 30° , when i start the engine it has 35 psi, when i drive a little bit the temperature from the water goes up to 80° the pressure goes down to 20 psi,
i don t know what kind of oil is in the motor, its clear but i think it is to thin.
I have the oil here now but not change it.
I can order the 30.
I have read that the additiv in the modern oil is not good für the prewar cars, so i orderd a unleaded oil
Best Regards
Franz

Multi-grade oil is designed to handle temperature changes better than single grade. 20W-50 will act like a 50W in hot weather and a 20W in cold weather. I don't know what the oil specifications are in Germany but in the USA many modern oils have reduced ZDDP (zinc). ZDDP helps prevent wear to the camshaft and tappets. Some oils still have adequate levels of ZDDP, including most 20W-50. If the oil has low ZDDP (under 1200 ppm) then you can put additive into the oil to raise ZDDP levels. But again, it might be different where you are.

i have read this here, that the reason i think that modern oil ist not for a ta motor
it may be wrong, so i ask here. it is no xpag motor !
ther is a oil filter in the car, but how fine ?

i am affraid because the oil pressure is only 20psi when the oil is warm

The translation is difficult but I think what they are saying is to not use modern detergent oil in an old engine that has run non-detergent oil, because it can knock heavy deposits loose and cause bearing damage. This is true. But on a rebuilt, clean engine you can safely run modern oil with detergent.

The car come to Germany 1979, and has 3 old owners before me here,
the first has done the rebuild of the car , color painting and some more,
from the papers i have, i can see that the car goes only e few 100 miles here
good or bad ???
so what do you think about this oil
ROWE HIGHTEC VINTAGE SAE 20W-50 MILD LEGIERT Oldtimer Motoröl

today i become my new su fuel pump
and the fuel filter
https://www.ebay.de/itm/Wasserabscheide ... m570.l1313

a realy heavy fine part

tomorrow i first replace the fuel pump and take a ride with the car, then i will look forward
order an other oil
change the plastic fuel filter to the new one

i will look to the pressure i see what happens.
Best Regards

In the days before people used detergent oils, the sludge deposits would end up as a buildup on the bottom of the sump (oil) pan. Anyone contemplating reviving an engine last run on non-detergent oil would be wise to drop the pan and remove all the deposits with a putty knife and solvent. Then for the first few oil changes you need to dump the oil and filter at the first sign of dirty oil.

Franz, if you wish to learn more on the oil questions you ask you may consider the book Praxishandbuch Öl. However I have to declare an interest, being the author. Google the title plus my name, Richard Michell. The English version is titled 'Which Oil?' All care, no responsibility!

So today i have a little time
i put the new su fule pump in the car, but it doesn t work as it schoud
a freind of mine came to help
we took a flexible gasoline hose put it directly to the pump and then in the tank
than it works perfekt
so it must be a hole or somethinng else from the end of the car to the fuel pump

from the back the two hose go to the middle of the car, there i find a 3 way tap from there only one goes up to the pump , but not straigt on it goes in a wavy line, never seen this before.

so i will make it new from the back to the front
there i will place this here
https://www.wellenshop.de/dreiwegehahn- ... -anschluss
so it looks like the original ...
from this part it will gi to this one
https://www.wellenshop.de/kraftstofffil ... ssenborder
and than to the fuel pump
Best Regards
Franz
