Rubber gear box cover '39 TA

Post by Bob Clarke526 » Sat Jan 11, 2020 1:34 pm

Hi, I'am trying to align the rubber gearbox cover on my '39 TA which is nearly ready after 7 years of
hope, despair and sheer frustration. I believe that it is the same as on a TC. The cover sits too high
and on top of the oil filler and the dipstick. Apart from enlarging the hole for the filler I cannot see any way of lowering it down, is it just me ? Thanks for any advice.

You have it too far forward. It does not cover any part of the engine. Is the footboard in place as it should go against that.

Sorry should have said the gearbox dipstick, the holes all align on the toe board and the gear lever fits through its hole but the whole cover sits too high and on top of the filler and preventing the dip stick going into the gear box.

I don't remember if the TA and TC covers are exactly the same although I'm pretty sure that they are. I wonder if the problem is with the cover or if it could be elsewhere. Perhaps the height of the gearbox mounts or floorboards? I haven't heard of any TC covers being sold that were too tall.

EDIT: I did just remember that there were some issues with rubber covers about 10 years ago where people had to trim the rubber down where the dipstick went through. It was too tall by about an inch.

Thanks Steve, I think that might be the answer, and it's pretty dark and out of site down there also the gearbox filler neck hole will have to be enlarged as it also does not pass through the cover.

Bob, it happened to my TC EXU as well when installing a new cover from Moss.
I left it as it is so far. But I´m willing to widen the hole that the dipstick sits propperly.

Morning Bernd, not just the dipstick hole that needed widening also quite a chunk of rubber to allow the oil filler to pass through, and the lube point just behind the gear lever had to be removed to allow access to the grease point. Fortunately it is moulded rubber and quite easy to work and sand down and finish off with bumper black. Good luck Bob

The rubber gearbox cover I bought from Moss was half an inch too short and wouldn't reach the firewall. I glued rubber strips around the front of the cover and it fitted perfectly. The hole for the dipstick and filler cap had to be enlarged slightly.

Thanks for that, the rubber came with the box of bits which I have now got around to fitting, I guess it came from the same source. bobC

Showing an original cover on my TC with no modifications. Dipstick fits perfect, while fill cap not quite picture perfect.
