Re: Originality versus sensible upgrades?

I like Robert's Amco Marvel mystery oiler. These allow MMO to be fed in with air/fuel to help lube valve's mainly, are they not? What with ethanol fuel, could be helpful if fancy exhaust valves and guides are not in place. Maybe help clean out coke in old engines, also? Maybe also increase compressi...

Re: My 1948 TC leaf springs service

Curious what people use to re-secure the clips around, if teflon strips added? I am thinking if 1/16" thick teflon x 5 is 5/16" will need new slightly larger clips? Can you make out the June manufacturer year stamped in there? Could be the key puzzle piece. Cary did make the rear springs and front c...

Re: Does anybody know TC0777?

Brad, a few snaps of an era 1980's British TC restoration (interior & engine bay) would be a curiosity for me, it not other's.

If I am not mistaken there are more than a couple of TD/C experts around here. Don't be shy about asking if a question comes up on your TD restoration.

Re: Originality versus sensible upgrades?

No matter what steering box used, many like a smaller steering wheel for their TC. Everyone knows the original wheels fell apart pretty soon.

Re: MG TC Restoration

Not sure what Tom is going on about, as all there is to do to change the ratio of TC diff is to get a hold of a matched ring gear and pinion to swap out. Abracadabra, new final drive ratio. No need to swap diff units from some other car or grind metal to fit in a Morris minor pumpkin, unless your TC...

Re: My 1948 TC leaf springs service

I guess the liner comes in black. I have seen clashing colors that's visible at the ends. Still works when the springs get encased in road grime and dirt and grease and so forth. You will find you really need to finish the ends so as not to dig into and make mincemeat of the liners. It can look funn...

Re: MG TC Restoration

The TC gearbox is a glorious piece of engineering and execution, and can easily handle the added power of a supercharger. The TD & TF gearbox was an ill conceived exercise if cost savings by MG, and TD/TF people are always coming up with schemes like the Ford box to lure another TC box onto Ebay. Th...

Re: Originality versus sensible upgrades?

A great number of ways seat belts can lessen injuries in a crash in a TC. Maybe one or two ways no seat belts might possibly do the same. Surprised to hear such talk here. True, with low back seats a seat belt will not prevent your neck being snapped when hit from behind, but to claim a seat belt wi...

Steve W, good to keep in mind that the changes Sherrell writes on have a lot to do with necessity and uber high mileage.

Re: Allowable repairs to body panels

I was speaking generally Stephen. Replacing entire steel panels on a TC has its downsize, too. Everything has a downside if you look for it.

Curious what finish you have applied over the new wood? Looks like stain or maybe shellac or varnish?

Re: Allowable repairs to body panels

Leading is most suitable for the purpose of sectional repairs because it can be done to fill seams from front to back. Depending on what part of the Country or World your in, even bondo repairs for dents and minor rust through can be done in a way where the metal is "treated" to neutralize the metal...

You mean one of the 2 main connections at back came loose and made the car die? Hmmm. You can find a generic ammeter somewhere like a auto part store to check operation of dynamo. Nothing special about the particular lucas ammeter as far as function. How is it behaving odd?

Re: Allowable repairs to body panels

People still use lead or lead/tin-- 70 lead/ 30 tin. Lead free "leads" come in numerous flavors. tin/copper/zinc comes to mind. An idea of range here: http://www.johnsonmfg.com/temp/NOLEAD.HTM

Re: 1949 TC gap between the running boards and rear wings.

Yes there is a gap. Generally a different gap up against tub vs outboard. I have an early TC and you have a late one, so just a guideline. With tubular welting in-place, about 1/2 inch from rear of board to front of welt. Or about 3/4 inch with no welt. I imagine one reason for the gap is to allow r...

Jim Buell article on TC front end an excellent reference, a copy can be found in the resources section (technical articles) on this site. And see an in depth series at ttypes.org/ttt2. here: http://ttypes.org/ttt2/?s=steering&submit=Search They discuss the VW etc conversions in a fair minded, compar...
