Re: Lay shaft inspection and replacement

Mark - you are correct; TC boxes are much more robust than TD/TF boxes (that's why TD racers installed TC boxes). I have had only one high-mileage TC box needing a new layshaft. That being said, needle bearings do wear, and sitting with a micrometer and measuring diameter and length is really the on...

Re: Chassis paint color

Believe Tom Wilson, who knows more about the production of TC's than any 50 TC owners assembled in one place! We eagerly await his authoritative book on the subject. But also know that few judges will note natural brake fittings or lines, not having the sump painted, or displaying a level of finish ...

Re: TC Steering box

Franz - always happy to help. If you are referring to the oil piump I mention on my mgtrepair.net page, we are just about to inspect the pattern, in order to begin casting housings. This will be our first pump, and we will be doing extensive testing in a T-series car before we feel we can sell even ...

Re: TC Steering box

The brass ? you show as #1 at the top of your first picture are trunion bushes for the TA/TB suspensions; one fits on either side of the spring in the trunion box. The rectangular plate at the left is the rear cylinder head plate, which often rusts through. #2, the 8 cylinders, are tappets or follow...

Re: TC engine overhaul

Lindi - First, be convinced that the engine is burning, rather than leaking, oil. Burning oil usually is caused by one of two problems - worn cylinders and/or bad rings, or worn valve guides and/or bad seals. Worn guides most show themselves when the car has sat overnight, and a puff of smoke comes ...

Re: XPAG con rods

What are the casting numbers of the rods? I believe that Morris rods have the number MOWOG 22809, with a smaller diameter gudgeon pin, and are obviously lighter and weaker. MG TC, TD and TF1250 rods are casting 24005, and 168559 for TF1500 rods (heaviest). I'm going by memory here... If you replace ...

To be precise, XPAG10433 was originally fitted to TC9652.

Re: Manifold studs

Niether - if you mean the long studs to hold both instake and exhaust manifolds, the shorter end goes into the head, not the block. The short end of a stud goes into the permanent part - the short end of the head studs go into the block, the short end of the exhaust manifold studs go into the exhaus...

Re: Facet fuel pump query

Good as they are, Facet pumps do break down from time to time. The VERY best, long-lived fuel pump I have found is an Airtex pump, one of which has lasted well over 100,000 miles (not in a T-series)... I am not sure whether they come or can be fitted with with positive ground, though. Tom Lange MGT ...

Re: Facet fuel pump query

The Facet pump works best when used by the fuel tank. If it were my car I would have an SU pump in the correct position on the firewall as the primary pump, and mount the Facet pump by the fuel tank as a switched back-up. Or, if you don't want to rely on an SU pump, you can mount the Facet pump by t...

Re: Very stiff choke control

Cliff - there are really only a few places that things can be binding - the cable, or the jet assembly. I see that you have done some things already, but I would detach the cable from the carbs, and see from the dash if it moves freely. The cable is spiral-wound, so you can run oil all along the len...

Re: TC identification

Franz - the only engine numbered 15761 that I can identify is XPAG/TD2/15761, originally in TD15383. That time-period matches your casting number of 24445. For what it's worth, that car is not listed in George Merson's TD list but many are not. I think it is safe to say that you have a 1250cc XPAG e...

Re: TC identification

Franz: The casting number 24445 shows that what you have is a later factory-exchange XPAG engine, with banana-shaped cooling passages, and NOT an XPJM engine from a Morris car. The tag could have come from anywhere, so I would ignore it. Just above the brass plate is a small rectangular area, with t...

Andrex Shock Parts Needed

I realize this is a T-ABC forum, but some of you also have TDs. I am trying to put together a set of Andrex shocks for a guy with a Mark II TD that has nothing, and I need some parts. I am interested in anything, in any condition - bodies, links, arms, etc.

Thanks very much.

Tor - I believe I have a spare TA bulkhead from a junked car, hanging on the wall; do you want me to look at it and see what parts, if any, are still on it?

History of the car is unlikely; people seem to have little luck tracking down earlier owners.

TC4624 originally came with engine XPAG5210.

Paint can very easily cover up the numbers. Scraping can be necessary. See the picture to be sure you are looking in the correct place (thanks to Tom Wilson)
