Re: M6 Fine Bolts?

Wonder whether the short block (only) can be worked on while upside down on the bench? The pistons can be installed from the bottom and the bench does not interfere with the fitting of sprockets on the front of the block -- just have to remember that the timing chain marks as shown in the illustrati...

Re: Wiring Loom or Harness

Yes, we are talking about the early TC's as distinguished from later years. Maybe there were added outer wrapping thread colors over the years of production ? Would be nice to know chronology of colors for the outer wrappings of the wiring harness loom. Octagonally yours, BOXLEY (Robert and MGTC0820)

Wiring Loom or Harness

Making some notes in preparation for replacement of the replacement wiring harness which itself is 40+ years old. The main question is whether all black should the the color of threads for the outer wrapping. We think we remember that when the "original" wiring was removed that every stranded lead w...

Re: TC in films

The list confirms that the Lavender Hill Mob scene was a TC. Perhaps there was a TA TB or TC in the movie "Sink the Bismarck" that is not listed by IMBD. The movie was released in 1960 in black and white, and I saw it on TV in the 70's or 80's. The scene with the car depicted one of the characters c...

Re: TC in films

Is there any way to search old Ministry of Transport records for the license number KKE976? Not able to view well enough under the front axle to determine whether there were trunnions as would be under the TB, but if that area could be seen, then would make a definite model choice. The main clue to ...

Re: Tire circumference with the illusion of speed and handling

Put new larger tires on the rear axle: Excelsior All Black 525/550 – 19 with circumference of 30-1/2 inches compared to original Dunlops of 27-1/2 inches. Now having driven a few miles, and not changing the differential ratio, the differences noted are: With the increase in tire circumference, the “...

Re: Running Board and Tire Tread Gap Distance from Rear Wing

With new tires, of larger circumference, the tread gaps between the rubber and rear fender opening seem not to have changed much, but the larger circle of the tire seemed to make the wheel well more cramped and increases the difficulty with removing and replacing the wheel. Rear Fender Left Side Gap...

From TC's Forever (p 203): "The Lucas Altette HF1234 horn appears to have come, like most other TC equipment, in two varieties. Early ones have a solid round body [as pictured below - from the back] IMG_2957.JPG while later ones sported a sizeable chunk out of the top of the body [as pictured in the...

Re: Running Board and Tire Tread Gap Distance from Rear Wing

These tires are the "Poster Children" for weather checked and dry rotted examples of the original Dunlop tire species of prehistory. Yes, it would be easier to get these off and on if at least one of the wings were a bit more outboard, but I wanted to be sure of the amount of set out for, or how muc...

Running Board and Tire Tread Gap Distance from Rear Wing

Need consensus on whether there is a TC "Factory Original" value for, and if so how much, gap there is between tire tread and rear wing (fender) front opening. Stated another way, but with same result, what is the "set out" measurement of the rear wing from the running board? Taking some measurement...

Re: TC9849 EXU Restoration

Are you thinking about doing any frame reinforcement with welding and plates in places that are suggested by Mike Sherrell in "TC's Forever"? Regrets that we did not do those welding modifications for Boxley's frame, when it was apart for sandblasting and powder coating, even though there had been n...

Re: Green Gripper Brake Lining

The brake shoes, which we recently received from Abingdon Spares, appear to be woven - as opposed to the generic composites of densely packed artificial and metallic material that come from commercial suppliers such as Moss Motors and the local auto parts store. That material is very resistant to we...

Yes, Steve, I sure hope your wished for combination of tires and differential will not decrease hill climbing ability. Maybe you have increased the horsepower of your XPAG? Those Firestone tires are close in listed diameter (at 29.8") and circumference (at 93.62") to the Excelsior model that I am fa...

Tom, thanks for some pointers. Question where to get rear differential gears so reasonably that will fit properly. Noted a few suppliers in UK for the Morris Minor and Spridget differentials, but seems a welter world to investigate. Found a posting by Robert Grunau in Ttalk.info for the following: "...

Second gear from standstill

We posted the earlier Chat about tire diameter and top speed, but now wish to question the opposite end of the speed range: With the original rear differential gear ratio of 5.125 to 1 and Dunlop original tires of 27" to 27-1/2" diameter, wondering whether any excessive wear of gears or clutch will ...

Re: Tire circumference with the illusion of speed and handling

Since looking again at the original Dunlops on the rear wheels of MGTC0820, there was found to be significant cracking of the rubber in the sidewalls. This is called “weather checking” also called “dry rot” and occurs when the rubber has been dried out by time. So these tires need to be replaced all...

Re: To spray or not to spray

Many times we have seen the attempt to use paint to cover a “multitude of sins,” but it usually does not work. You say that the present paint is cracking in places. This probably means that in order to do the paint job correctly, that ALL of the paint should be removed down very close the metal. Thi...

Re: Tire circumference with the illusion of speed and handling

Thank you Duncan M. for warning me about the tires not being capable of fitting into the wheel wells when mounted on the wheels. No, we do not have the wide rim wheels from Bob Gruneau. I do remember having to wrestle with getting the wheels mounted when the Model A Ford tires were in use. I did not...

Re: Tire circumference with the illusion of speed and handling

Yes, it is hard to get information about tire circumferences. The measurement usually must be derived mathematically from looking at the "overall" tire diameter -- but even that information is not always available, or perhaps totally dependable. And then, like dummy me, the wrong formula can be appl...
