King pin lubrication

So I have the o/s king pin apart. Interesting that the split pins and washers holding the brake shoes to the backplate were missing as was the nut on the end of the kingpin cotter pin  Upon inspection of the new and old parts throws up a question - from looking at the old parts the king pin is ...

Re: TC Kingpin replacement

Kingpin replacement in a TC is easier than MGB. For one, the bushes are a straight 3/4" taper so no special reamer is required. I have purchased king pins and bushes from Roger Furneaux and the quality is quite nice. He also sells bushes and cotter pins. Many sources for the pins have the wrong hea...

Re: TC Kingpin replacement

I have a reamer you can use. Thank you for the very kind offer. I do have an expanding reamer and pilot that I bought ages ago just in case I might need it one day for this very job (makes a welcome change as I usually buy things that might come in useful one day but never do). Thank you again for ...

TC Kingpin replacement

In the near future I plan on replacing the king pins on my TC. I have done king pins on an MG B many years ago so not a complete novice on these matters, I just wondered if there is anything I really need to know before I start and where is the best place to buy the parts from (uk please)? Thank you...

Re: Water temp gauge

If the gauge is negative earth, can't you simply switch the wires round so it is fooled into thinking it is.? Unfortunately not. The gauge has three terminals, +ve, -ve and sender, the case is plastic. Could probably do it if you took it apart and swoped the wiring internally. I did briefly investi...

Re: Water temp gauge

In that case, I would contact the manufacturer and ask for specs on sender resistance. Then you can measure the sender(s) you have to see if they are working correctly. If so then the gauge itself must be faulty. A lot of vehicles like MGB, etc use Smith's electric water temp gauges and they seem t...

I would suspect the problem is the sender rather than the gauge itself. You should be able to order a new sender unit.
I have tried quite a few senders and they are all giving approx the same results.

Water temp gauge

Who else is using a Smiths magnolia faced electrical type water temp gauge in a TC? If so what is the accuracy like? I have one in mine and it reads a complete load of bo**ocks. My suspicions were first aroused when it climbed to approx 110deg c driving along the road. 110 deg in an un pressurised s...

Re: Taps and dies

As Tom says taps and dies come in many configurations and classes. I like to use machine taps rather than hand taps as they are designed to not have to do a half a turn then turn the tap backward to break the chip. And as I do several blind holes so I use spiral flute taps which causes the chip to ...

Re: It's finally on the road :)

Thank you for the replies, as far as I am aware the camshaft is the standard one as fitted at the factory. I will reset the timing and give it a run up the road and report back.

It's finally on the road :)

So after quite a long wait the TC I imported is finally on the road now the DVLA has given me a registration number for it....... :) :) Upon driving the car a few observations, the brakes need adjusting and possibly the shoes and drums de-glazing or softer linings and the engine although sounding qu...

Re: Water tap on block thread problem

Cast iron is easy to thread just don't use any cutting fluid as it is self lubricating. Always use high speed steel taps (HSS) never the cheaper carbon steel (or snap-on) as they are just not sharp enough. See if you can get a bsp heli-coil for the best repair.

Engine paint colours/codes

Hi,
I am wanting to repaint my TC's engine and wondered if anyone know the correct red and light green that was used for the block/head and rocker cover?
Also any recomended supplier for said paints?
Thank you

Re: priming the oil system prior to 1st restart

Just take the plugs out and spin on the starter until you have oil pressure. Once pressure is up another 30 seconds of spinning. This should be done with the rocker cover removed to check oil is getting to the rockers. When you are happy oil is getting all round the engine, refit plugs and rocker co...
