TC instrumentation panel lettering

Post by timandgerda » Wed Aug 19, 2020 4:42 am

Does anyone know the size of the letters used on the instrumentation panel - from pictures it looks around 2.5 to 3mm?
Cheers
Tim

I would speak with the man who does the very best and most authentic instrument panel rebuilds and restorations, Craig Seabrook, of the Whitworth Shop, Novelty, Ohio.

Thanks Tom. I am UK based so a refurb by Craig would not be an option due to postage etc hence to question over font size.

I have just measured the height of the lettering on my new (bronze) instrument panel and it looks like 1/10th inch (or 2.5mm) if that helps.

Ray.

Of course the EXU's had no lettering, and it is not missed. Not sure if the other EXport models did lettering.

Would it be possible to remove the lettering without damaging the paint it's stuck on to.?

If so, how? Any ideas appreciated.

The original lettering was silk-screened on the panel, I believe.

If that's the case it might also be baked on - in which case I don't think anything will remove it without damaging the underlying paint.

The original font was indeed sillk screened, and according to my notes was a unique lettering for this application. The letters measured 3.0mm in height. Since the lettering is only located on the center console, you don't need to send the entire dash assembly to Craig. You could just slip the center panel into a padded envelope. He really does the best work.

You can buy stick-on letters from several sources, but it isn't correct. Personally I would prefer no lettering at all rather than use stickers. Unless someone were to cut some very thin vinyl so that individual letters could be applied. That might look ok.

Thanks all. I still have to get the paint for the panel - a small section under the switch area is still original so I will try to match this up. I plan to try with a Letraset approach i.e. individual letters but I will try it out first on a blank plate and see how it goes. I will post a picture if it works or failing that probably go for no letters for now.
Cheers
Tim
