TC spare wheel spinner.

I have just bought one of these ingenious devices as my original was missing, The problem I am having is that although it works - in that the emblem remains correctly orientated - the wheel is not tight on the mounting despite tightening the spinner.

What could be going on here??

Measure the amount of unthreaded shank.

And the length of the tapered hub.

The taper on the hub is the same as yours i.e. 1"

The unthreaded part on my spinner is just 3/4". That is 1/2" smaller than yours.

I am not sure what I need to do about it.

Could it be the entire length is too long? Mine is about 3-1/8".

Funny, just the other day I ran into this issue on a TC owned by a guy for the past 40 years. The wheel does not tighten fully even with the spinner fully tightened

Make sute that the spare wheel is correctly aligned, wiggel it about a bit and see if that helps, it does on my car!

Being a mechanical engineer, this kind of problem attracts my attention. I'm sure we can solve it.
Hold your spinner in place. Now how far does your screw thread extend beyond the wheel hub?
Mine is about 1/2" or 12.5 mm.

I don't think the overall length is an issue as there is plenty of room from the end of the threads to the back of the hub. Also, the wheel does not tighten regardless of what I do even if I use a mallet to tighten the spinner. The only improvement is made by adding a ring of foam rubber to the hub taper ...but it is not satisfactory.

Is your aluminum mounting hub threaded all the way through?

When you screw it in all the way, how much is still exposed?

Could it be that the end is coming up against the steel spacer ring between the aluminum hub mount and the steel support frame?

AHHH! I think I know what the problem is.
In the photo, my new spinner is placed alongside the original. You can see that the original has a taper and the new one is machined differently.

Quite what to do about it is another matter!!

Ah, yes, I see that taper as well.
Here is mine before I had it restored and replated.
I remember asking the plater if I should try to take it apart, which would mean drilling out the pins, but he said no.

When I assembled mine, I found there was an optimum point at which the spllt pin could be fitted. Too far in and you can't access the holes.

I have been overthinking this. The problem is not with the spinner but with the wheel and the hub.

I simply wrapped some fabric insulating tape around the neck of the hub and fitted the wheel.

It is now a tight fit.
